Item Description...
Three newly minted knighs of the British Empire, including the Shakespearean actor/manager Abercrombie Lewker, gather at a celebratory house party in Wales. The three go off for a day's rock climbing but only two return, prompting "Filthy" Lewker to turn sleuth once again. First published in the U.K. in 1954, this is the first U.S. appearance for this title.

Classic Mystery and Mountain Climbing to boot  Jan 10, 2008
If There Wasn't Death

The Rue Morgue publishers are heavily into the immediate post golden age of mysteries. Among their mainly women writers, Gwyneth Little, Gladys Mitchell etc are two stellar men. Manning Coles (yeah, that's two) and Glyn Carr. The latter's novels are almost impossible to find (at least before Ebay came into being) and it is a service for those who were looking for the Lewker (Filthy) -a classic golden age pun- in his early mysteries, two of which have already been published by Rue Morgue in the previous years.
The books are sturdily bound, in the manner of Dover books of yore, and well printed.
As to the mystery itself: there is a reason why Glyn Carr never took off. One, Abercrombie Lewker, a Shakesperean actor/climber and if one goes back long enough, counter espionage agent during the War (under author's Showell Styles name)is not a consistent character. The writing, competent that it is never really attracts the readers: there is something missing. The only positive thing is, and it is big, the climbing scenes, especially Wales in the early books, and which unfortunately is minimal in Death Under Snowdon.
I have never seen mass paperback edition of any of these books (in the USA), and guess what, the publishers did not think they will fly and they were right.
For the 50s, when Christie was reigning, JDC was still producing books under two names, and Crispin and Innes were prolific, Glyn Carr came in lower down the ladder.
But readers, let me clear away a misconception I might have created: these books are great for people who enjoy the old fashioned mysteries. There is a coziness about them that are, alas, totally missing in modern fiction. Filthy, sitting in a snow covered mountain, drinking beer and quoting Shakespeare is a character one can fall in love with. The mysteries need a bit of juice but for all of us who love the old days and old books, these are worth cuddling up with.
Not the best of Glyn Carr, but it is very enjoyable.
