Community Description
From Publishers Weekly
Utilizing more than a few narrative elements from James Dickey's 1970 classic Deliverance, Liparulo sends a quartet of middle-aged Colorado buddies on a 10-day vacation in the remote wilds of northern Saskatchewan in this slow-moving techno-thriller. Journalist and avid bow-hunter John Hutch Hutchinson and his fellow urban professionals are all tired of dealing with their own personal adversities and looking forward to a few idyllic days of hunting and fishing. When they encounter crazed millionaire Declan Gabriel Page and his plan to obliterate an entire town and its 242 residents with a space-based laser, their wilderness retreat turns into a nightmarish battle for survival. The implausible technology and all-too-predictable ending will leave readers longing for a few guitar-banjo duels. (Nov.)

Deadfall is Liparulo at his absolute best. Very rarely does a writer come along who can entertain at the highest level while exploring human character so effectively. With titles like Comes a Horseman, Germ, and now Deadfall under his belt, Liparulo is proving that he is an author who demands to be noticed.

Somewhat plausable thriller  Dec 11, 2009
For a book about "Survivalists", they could use a little more training. That being said, there is a lot of good suspense built into this story of a psyco-sicko techno rich kid and his goupies trying to take over a small town in the sticks and a group of "campers" on a hunting expidition. The real suspense, and the part that wants you to keep reading, is more about how the survivors keep surviving until the end.
69 violent chapters  Oct 25, 2009
I read DEADLOCK first and decided to read the preceding book. I'm glad I did, because of the introduction of not only the lead character, but of Laura, Dillon, and Julian. It does have a controversial theme with the argument that video game violence desensitizes the teenage and young adult addicts to the games. The author of course incorporates the same excessive violence that he is criticizing in the framework of the story, and therefore makes me question the sincerity of his theme. Other adult books by the same author have the same emphasis on violence. This emphasis does make me wonder why some seem to regard Liparulo as a "Christian author". Be that as it may, the two "Hutch" novels are intensely readable.
Book Review: Deadfall (A John Hutchinson Novel)  Sep 19, 2009
"Four friends, beautiful scenery,
and a high tech satellite weapon
in the hands of indulgent, maniacal teenagers."

In "Comes a Horseman", I was intrigued. In "Germ", I was astonished. In "Deadfall (A John Hutchinson Novel)", I am hooked. Robert Liparulo has become one of my favorite authors.

All three Liparulo's novels have the key elements that make for a fine suspense thriller; thorough research, educating the reader as well as entertaining them; descriptive and engaging scenery as well as character dialogue; and a mind tripping plot.

In this novel, four friends arrive in Canada on a hunting trip. On route to the isolated area in Canada, all four men, save one, discuss their personal and professional problems and express their hope that this trip will be just what they need.

They no sooner arrive when they stumble upon a spoiled billionaire teenager and his band of misfits bent on capturing footage for a new video game. This group of teenagers know little and care less about the people in the nearby town of Fiddler Falls. Declan Page, their leader, is set on gathering real-life blood and gore footage to use in the new video game.

After capturing the town and killing two townspeople using a hightech GPS tracking system combined with a prototype military defense weapon called SLC, the militant teenagers discover John Hutchinson (Hutch) out hunting.

The race is on from this point and what follows is not stop action, a survival story at its best. Hutch and his friends, save one, head toward Fiddler Falls in hopes of finding help.

They find no help.

The townspeople are being held hostage and all resources either disabled or destroyed. They stumble upon the sheriff's wife (now a widow) and her son as they attempt to escape as well. The small group is quickly separated when Declan and his group return.

The story develops on to a wonderfully enjoyable suspense thriller. I especially enjoyed the thought processes of all the characters. The part of the evil Declan and his bumbling gun-loosing girlfriend had me wondering how Declan ever swayed the others on his team to follow him. Then again, the Bible records the answer- "money answereth all things".

I have no doubt that you will enjoy this book. I am certainly looking forward to reading the sequel "Deadlock".

Excellent Novel of Suspense  Aug 23, 2009
I am a fan of Robert Liparulo. I enjoyed his first novel, Comes a Horseman and his follow-up, Germ so I was excited to let my eyes cross over the words to his latest adventure, Deadfall. While he doesn't implement the twist and turns found in a Dekker novel, Liparulo can tell an excellent story.

In Deadfall we find a small town in Canada called Fiddler Falls. According to the website, it has a population of 242. They are what we would consider -secluded-. Out in the wilderness and far from civilization.

The perfect place to get-away for those who enjoy hunting.

While our main characters travel to the forests around Fiddler Falls, our villains enter the town and do a little hunting themselves. Our two groups clash and the game of cat and mouse ensues.

I have noticed that Robert Liparulo writes very strong female characters. In the three novels I have read, the female characters are strong-willed while the male characters tend to come off as weak or timid. Maybe not so much in Deadfall, but all the men have some kind of relational problems. In this book, the main "hero" suffered through a nasty divorce where his wife tried to turn his children against him.

Perhaps, it's a way to get us to invest in characters before they get vaporized. (Not that this hero does). But I was surprised by a few of the deaths in Deadfall.

The plot behind this book: What would it be like if there was a video game company that decided to use a real weapon on real people in order to get a "real" effect for its video games?

So when I say vaporized...

Pretty much everything Liparulo pens has been purchased by movie producers. In fact, work is underway (pre-production) for a story of his that hasn't even been released.
Terrifying Book!  Aug 22, 2009
Hutch,Phil,Terry, andDavid have gone on a hunting and fishing trip to Fiddler Falls, Saskatchewan Canada. The
four of them are ytrying to get over a very trying year. They have suffered from divorce, bankruptcy, depression and job loss. They soon discover upon arrival that they are on the hunting trip from hell. Declan Page and his
cronies have chosen Fiddler Falls to field test the ultimate weapon. The name of the weapon is SLCR (Satellite Laser Cannon Remote). They also have someone to videotape the killings to use the footage in a video game. The
entire community of Fiddler Falls is taken hostage and held prisoner in the community center. They also join forces with Dillon and his mother. Armed with only a bow Hutch and his group have to do battle with the well armed
group of Declan Page. Declan is the son of Brendan Page a billionaire industrialist who specializes in weapons
and mercanaries. You will discover in the next book that Declan gets his evil streak from his father. This is an
action packed book that you will enjoy reading.
