Item Description...
Ending the Christ Myth, November 2006 Dead Little Fish is a meticulously researched exploration into the origins of Jesus Christ. It lays to rest any notions that Christ was an actual person, instead clearly showing how events from his life were adopted from pre-existing myths.

Book Description

Daring and controversial, author Derek Murphy re-vamps the Christ Myth theory with shocking new evidence from the traditions of astronomy, mythology, comparative religion and Christian mysticism. Tearing through the worn-out scholastic and apologetic criticisms of mythical Jesus research, Dead Little Fish relies neither on an argument from silence, nor merely on similarities between Christianity and Pagan spirituality, but provides evidence and quotes from within the Christian tradition itself which demonstrate that many early Christians refused the idea that Jesus was ever a real person. Rather than an attack on the traditional values of Christianity through debunking the historical Jesus, this remarkable book is written as a defense of the mythological Christ, and argues that the spiritual core of Christianity can be preserved, and even enhanced, by letting go of the false idea of a historical founder.

Not a terrific introduction to the Christ Myth theory  Oct 17, 2007
Derek Murphy, a graduate student in Religious Literature, was in a little too much of a hurry to crank out this work, which seeks to demonstrate that Jesus Christ was a mythical figure whose cult was patched together from other ancient dying-and-rising-god myths.

Murphy proclaims "I've done my research" (p 11) but he apparently didn't keep very good notes. While summarizing some solid evidence against the historicity of Jesus, he manages to pack in a number of amateurish howlers:
* He writes that the names of the canonical Gospels "were chosen later to match four of the apostles mentioned in the text itself" [p.14] -- true of Matthew and John, not true of Mark and Luke.
* On the same page he writes, "Matthew and Luke copied down all of Mark's stories and then embellished with Pagan mythology." The Q source was pagan?
* He writes that the early text, the Didache, doesn't "mention Jesus at all" (p.15) when in fact it references him by name four times.
* Noting the discovery of a number of previously lost gospels in the 20th Century, he adds that archaeologists "are finding more all the time." (p.18) If only it were true!

Aside from gaffes like these, Murphy consistently confuses gnosticism and docetism with the idea that Jesus was mythological. For instance, he cites Iraneaus's injunction against those "asserting that Jesus was born only in appearance and was crucified in appearance and died in appearance" as evidence that Iraneaus was "threatened by claims of the mythological Christ" (p.19). He claims that the works of the Nag Hammadi library "align Jesus within the mythological tradition" (p.18). But neither Gnostics nor other docetists believed that Jesus was not a historical figure. They held that his physical existence was only apparent; that a divine being could not really have been sullied by contact with the material world. But they certainly believed in a Jesus that appeared in space and time. To claim that Gnostics held that Jesus was simply a mythological figure is a gross misreading of these texts, and a misunderstanding of what Iraneaus and the other church Fathers were railing against.

All these mistakes and misreadings of the evidence in just the first chapter of the book bode very ill for a work that seeks to demonstrate the Christ Myth theory. Readers interested in genuine academic explorations of this theory would do better to turn to Robert M. Price's The Incredible Shrinking Son of Man or Earl Doherty's The Jesus Puzzle, and leave Mr. Murphy to finish his degree.
