Item Description...
The Gospel of the kingdom of God finds its most consistent Old Testament treatment in Daniel. This biblical book is much more than a combination of miraculous stories and fantastic visions; it presents the Gospel of the promised Messiah and his eternal kingdom. However, interpreting Daniel is no easy task. While the narratives about Daniel and his fellow Judeans appear simple (belying a rich theological complexity), the visions at the end of the book seem extraordinarily complicated. Thus, the challenge for any commentator is to understand the book as a whole and to explain its rich and variegated view of the Gospel and the Savior. Since at least the first century before Christ, Daniel has been the subject of intense scrutiny by religious zealots seeking to view it as an eschatological roadmap for determining all sorts of harmful theologies of triumphalism. In our day this is often manifested in millennial speculation. This commentary shows that Daniel is not an adjunct to such theories, an oracle to be bent in service to eschatological speculation about an earthly messianic kingdom. Instead, it is a book about Christ, the salvation he accomplished by his cross, and the eternal glory he promises his redeemed people. Christ preserved his people throughout the Babylonian captivity and pointed them forward to the coming of his kingdom at his first advent, and the consummation at his second advent. Through this book Christ preserves us in faith until he returns in glory to bring us into the fullness of eternal life.

Commentary on OT Picture of Messiah & His Eternal Kingdom  Jun 26, 2008
Being the confessional Lutheran that he is, Steinmann accurately interprets one of the more difficult and controversial books of the Older Testament. First, one encounters in work on Daniel the liberals who doubt its authorship and dating and thus, Messianic blessings. Second, one encounters the dispensationalists who with their wrong heremeneutic avoid the cross of Christ and distort the overall biblical picture. To both of these, this commentary makes the necessary critiques and rights the Biblical ship, so to speak.

Steinmann rightly sees Daniel more than an eschatological ramp for speculation on millenium ideas, but rather Christ preserving a people for Himself through captivity and thereby pointing them to Christ's first advent, and us to His second.

Thus, the import of this book for the present: the strong, frequent NT statements from this prophet of "Son of man coming with the clouds."

There is much strength and comfort to be gained from this careful and meticulous work, including his own translation and commentary which stresses incarnational and sacramental theology at its base. As well, he has fine excursus on topics such as dispensationalism, four-kingdom schema, and Lutheran Confessions on the Antichrist in Daniel, among others.

This is fine, careful, scholarly work which chooses to interact with other interpretations and challenge them with philology, grammar, history, etc. Since there are so many familiar, miraculous stories in this Major Prophetic book, Steinmann has a joyous chore before him of finding both the Law and the blessed Gospel of Christ to separate and proclaim. He does this masterfully in this helpful and detailed resource for the church.

I look forward to mining this for all its worth for Christ's children! You will too, so get one and use it.
