Overview
In the late 1920s, Anna tries to help her younger sister Katya regain her strength and joy in life after she becomes crippled by polio.

Publishers Description
The narrator recalls how long ago, as a young girl, she used to dance with her beloved baby sister Katya in the house and the surrounding fields of the family's farm. But when Katya is five she is suddenly overcome by a high fever. Although she recovers from the lingering illness, Katya's legs are left weakened and twisted. Still, the older sister dances with her beloved younger sibling, lifting her high and carrying her around in a wheelbarrow. Together they dream of a time when Katya will dance on her own once again. Then Mama and Papa announce that Katya must leave home and go to a hospital in the city where doctors will try to make her legs strong again. The narrator misses her sister and worries: will the treatment work so that Katya will dance again?

From The Book Jacket
ANNA AND HER LITTLE SISTER KATYA LIVE ON A WISCONSIN FARM. THEIR FAVORITE GAME IS DANCING IN THE MEADOW, PRETENDING THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL BALLERINAS IN SATIN SLIPPERS WITH RIBBONS TIED AROUND THEIR ANKLES. BUT WHEN KATYA FALLS ILL WITH A MYSTERIOUS CRIPPLING DISEASE CALLED POLIO, HER DANCING DREAMS ARE PUT ON HOLD-PERHAPS FOREVER. EVEN THOUGH KATYA'S HEALTH IMPROVES, THE SICKNESS HAS LEFT HER LEGS WEAK AND MISSHAPENED. MAMA AND KATYA MUST TRAVEL TO A SPECIAL HOSPITAL IN MINNEAPOLIS, WHERE KATYA WILL LEARN TO WALK AGAIN. WHILE WAITING EAGERLY FOR HER SISTER'S RETURN, ANNA DREAMS OF RETURNING ONCE MORE TO THEIR BALLERINA GAME. KATYA'S HOMECOMING, HOWEVER, IS BITTERSWEET. SHE HAS UGLY, BULKY BRACES ON HER LEGS, AND WALKS AS STIFFLY AS A DIME STORE SOLDIER. BOTH GIRLS ARE SORELY DISAPPOINTED, AND KATY GROWS INCREASINLGLY DESPONDENT. ULTIMATELY, THOUGH, ANNA USSES HER INGENUITY-AND HER HEART-TO FIND A WAY FOR HER SISTER TO DANCE AGAIN, IN HER OWN JOYOUS WAY.

More About Dori Chaconas & Constance Rummel Bergum

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Dori Chaconas was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1938. The second child in a family of seven, Dori fell into the role of storyteller, nursery rhyme singer, and general entertainer for her siblings. She claims she learned about story pacing early. If the story action lagged, her fidgety audience would either scatter or start a poking war.

She has been married to Nick, her high school sweetheart, for 44 years. Everyone says the romance will last. They raised four daughters, and are now enjoying three grandsons especially Grandpa, having been outnumbered by women all those years.

When their daughters were young, Dori wrote for them. She published three picture books and more than fifty stories in children's magazines. In the 70's, her interest turned to yarn embroidery design and she sold designs to major needlework companies and national magazines.

In 1997, Dori started writing stories again, partly to keep her grandsons from fidgeting or starting poking wars. Her stories reflect the warmth of family life. Dori gives credit to her parents for giving her a strong sense of family, and to her children and grandchildren for keeping it alive.

Gentle story of sibling warmth and overcoming adversity  Dec 10, 2006
Constance R. Bergum's gorgeous drawings lend to the lovely story of Anna and her little sister Katya, who live on a Wisconsin farm and love to dance in the meadow, presenting they're ballerinas. When Katya falls ill with polio her dancing days seem over: her legs are weak and misshapen and Katya must struggle to even walk again - how will she dance with braces on? The sisters put heads together to resolve even a crippling illness in this gentle story of sibling warmth and overcoming adversity which parents and teachers will relish.
