Item Description...
A young girl and her father cross the border into Mexico, where the child encounters poverty for the first time. Together, she and her dad ponder the question, "What can we do about poor people?" Should they put money into every outstretched cup? Will buying a blanket make a difference? What about that shiny bike back home? This book opens discussion for parents and children on responsibility toward the poor of the world.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
A Beautiful Book  Jan 11, 2007
This is a very sweet story and would be helpful in teaching children to think of others. The illustrations are beautiful. And, since it was written by my niece, I thought it was wonderful!

Asking important questions without easy answers  Oct 23, 2006
In this gently told story, a young girl lets us know what she thinks as she and her father visit Mexico. From the opening line, "We didn't get here on a cruise ship like a lot of these tourists," we know that the story will give us a fresh perspective. The narrator tells about taking photos of what she sees, thinking about what she wants to buy in the shops, and meeting children and mothers with hands and cups held out for money. She and her father talk about what they might do to be helpful, but don't have any easy answers. That leaves us with the same questions they have. The experience is simply told, and the voice of the young narrator rings true. We are drawn into feeling what the girl feels and facing our own questions of what we can do to make a difference. While aimed toward readers six to ten years old and their parents, the story is timeless and fitting for everyone.
The illustrations blend well with the words. They are soft to match the tone of the story, but also bright and colorful to show us the people scenes the girl and her father see.
Heartstring tugger about caring and sharing  Oct 20, 2006
This is a great talk-about book. First there's the adventure of the trip itself, then there are the street people, poorest of the poor with their cups. There is wonderful contrast between the beauty of the country and the poverty, and there is this genuine empathy for the beggars who hold out their cups, hoping travelers will fill them with money. These travelers give as much as they can and in the process learn about inequality and ponder the great question--what is the best way to help? I think this book can be a stepping off point for discussion in families, in groups. The illustrations are bright and the story makes you think about our own responsibilities to those without enough.
