Overview
SUBTITLE: 38,102 Miles. 38 Years. 1 Mission.

On May 17, 2008, Arthur Blessitt walked his 38,102nd mile in Zanzibar, off of the coast of Tanzania, completing a journey that began in 1969. Arthur started walking with a twelve-foot cross on December 25, 1969 and has successfully carried a large wooden cross into every nation and major island group of the world.

This book reads like a travelogue as you journey with Arthur in country after country. You?ll begin with Arthur?s initial call from God to carry a cross from Hollywood, where he was known as "the minister of Sunset Strip," across America to its capital, Washington, DC.

You?ll go with Arthur as he hacks his way through the Darien Jungle from Panama to Colombia. You?ll join Arthur and his son, Joshua, as they take the cross to South Africa in 1986. You?ll be moved by the stories of how God used them to bring people spiritual, physical and relational healing during the final tumultuous days of racial apartheid. You?ll trek with Arthur and his wife, Denise, as they cross desert sands to take the cross to Saudi Arabia when the nation was closed to tourists and as they walk with the cross in the various regions of the former USSR just weeks after its collapse.

As Arthur has traveled around the world, he has found the cross to be a universal symbol of God?s love that can be understood in spite of language and cultural barriers. He writes, "Perhaps I?m the only person in history who has been physically shaped by the weight of a cross. But the changes the cross has brought to my physical body are not important. What is important is how the cross has changed my life and the lives of so many others, from the inside out!"

Moving Testimonies from 38 Years of Following Jesus  Sep 11, 2009
"Then Jesus said to His disciples, 'If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.'" -- Matthew 16:24 (NKJV)

Since the first time I ever read this verse, I've wondered how I should tell if Jesus meant for me to take up a literal cross to follow Him. Having read Arthur Blessitt's astonishing testimony of literally doing so during 38 years and over 38,102 miles (including some pretty cross-unfriendly territory such as North Korea and Saudi Arabia), I now know the answer: If I listen to Him, I'll know what cross He wants me to bear.

Many times people who aren't Christians will ask me what it's like to have a close and continual relationship with Jesus. In the future, I intend to point them to this book for the answer.

The book does a wonderful job of showing how Jesus prepares us to hear him (Mr. Blessitt began receiving directions from Jesus about where to go during chores as a youngster) and then strengthens us to be prepared for the burdens He wants us to carry for Him. In the process, the book demonstrates beautifully how He will provide and how His purposes will be served.

Today, many people will tell you that they like Jesus just fine, but they can't stand Christians. In becoming very Christ-like through his sanctification of service, Arthur Blessitt provides a great example of what it means to be a true follower of Christ.

The book is wonderfully illustrated and the vignettes from the long journey are well told.

I was reminded of this verse as well: "I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not acknowledged me, . . . ." -- Isaiah 45:5 (NKJV)

To live a life like this one is a great blessing. May you receive such a blessing from following Him.

Utterly fascinating to read, regardless of one's religious views  Sep 8, 2009
Some people are far more driven by their spirituality than others. "The Cross" is a chronicle of the mission embarked on by author Arthur Blessitt. Over the span of four decades, he sought to carry a large wooden cross across the planet, visiting every country in the world along with his cross. With no shortage of stories from his travels, his remarkable narrative is utterly fascinating to read, regardless of one's religious views.

Mission Accomplished - One step at a time  Aug 6, 2009
Reviewed by Richard R. Blake for Reader Views (8/09)

"The Cross" is the story of Arthur Blessitt's personal spiritual journey in a pilgrimage to answer what he considered God's call to carry a cross from Hollywood, California across America to Washington, D.C.

Subsequently Blessitt has traveled around the world carrying a twelve-foot cross to 315 nations and island groups, on all seven continents. He began this adventure in America and his most recent walk, in June 2008, ended his 38,102 mile mission in Zanzibar.

Arthur might be compared to a modern-day John the Baptist, a voice crying in the wilderness, physically carrying the cross to illustrate the cross as a spiritual symbol, bringing the message of hope and salvation, in a demonstration of God's love for man by sending His son Jesus to die for their sin.

I felt the excitement and expectancy of following Jesus, as I figuratively stood with Arthur in the shadow of the cross, as I read of how he followed God's lead one step at a time. His adventure is a reminder to the reader of the words of Jesus in Mark 8:34, "If any man would come after me, he must deny himself and follow me." Every reader must experience individually what it means to deny self and willingly follow Jesus.

Pages from Arthur's journal reveal his complete dependence on God, of his intimacy with God, and of his spirit of dedication and determination. I personally liked the format of the book. Each chapter begins with an entry from Arthur's journal and included remarkable photos which aide the reader in visualizing various aspects of Arthur's journey, his family, other team members, and the thousands of people he has reached out to in nearly forty years of ministry. Arthur also included some practical pointers on "How to Share Jesus in Our Complex World."

Whether walking alone with no one to applaud him, addressing cheering throngs, or being arrested and thrown into jail Arthur has followed God's call on his life. He tells of sharing Christ with Buddhists in Japan, Hindus in India, Muslims in Egypt, and with Jews in Israel. Arthur exemplifies what it means to be an authentic, radical Christian in the world today.

Blessitt writes to encourage the reader to focus on Jesus and to remain faithful to their unique calling. "The Cross" is a reminder to every Christian that we are pilgrims on a spiritual journey, following the footsteps of Jesus, sharing His love, joy, and salvation globally.

An inspiring, life-changing journey!  Jul 25, 2009
"The Cross" by Arthur Blessitt is a terrific book! What a wonderful testimony to pen an inspiring, but rocky 38-year journey to LITERALLY bring the cross to every nation on the earth. This non-fiction triumph is loaded with beautiful photographs chronicling the epic event. Wonderful stories share the journey of the man and his family, Christ and the cross and the conversations to which this spectacular undertaking led.

I was particularly touched by the power of perspective. For example, one man's "normal" is another's horrifying awakening to a train rumbling by his bed. This unique lifestyle on the road is beautifully shared through personal tales from the author and others. The chapters are assembled thematically rather than chronologically, which seemed confusing at first, but actually contributed to the overall experience of being moved by this book. The handwriting font used throughout adds to the personal feel of reading the journal of the author.

Arthur Blessit has shared the gospel of Christ with every people group through his actions, words, and inspiration of others to follow in his footsteps. I found myself weeping joyfully several times during my journey with this life-changing book. This is a MUST READ for every Christian who questions whether their service is valuable - and for every non-Christian to know the heart and desire of Jesus Himself to be known by all men. Thank you, Arthur, for hastening His return to take us home!
