Item Description...
Overview
Scientist and theologian Sjoerd Bonting offers a new overarching framework for thinking about issues in religion and science. He looks at the creation controversy itself, including biblical perspectives, traditional doctrines, and the particular potential contribution of chaos theory. Finally, Bonting extends this perspective, a combination of chaos theory and chaos theology he calls "double-chaos," into a framework that addresses traditional questions about evil, divine agency, soteriology, the understanding of disease, possible extraterrestrial life, and the future.

A Speculative Chaos Theology of Evolutionary Creation  Nov 19, 2005

"It has become next to impossible for a single mind fully to command more than a small specialized portion of science .. I can see no escape from this dilemma .. than that some of us should venture to embark on a synthesis of facts," E. Schrödinger

Alternative Accounts:
Dr. Bonting, a published scientist and theologian, explores alternatives to the 'creatio ex nihilo' dogma, that God created the universe out of nothing at all.
The mystery of creation has been lately a territory for conflict, Intelligent design is challenging Darwinian mutation, led by outstanding scientists M. Behe and W. Dembski. Evolution 'thesis,' is assailed by biblical literalist, while contradicted by biblical scholar of scientific knowledge and theologian who appreciate modern developments in science.

Scope of Chaos Theology:
Writing this book, the Rvd. Bonting has followed suit of some notable forerunners, fellow members of the 'Society of Ordained Scientists,' A. Peacocke and John Polkinghorne, focusing on his developed Chaos Theology in contrast to other cosmologies. On this issue he says that he felt it presented several conceptual, scientific, biblical problems, and cultivates serious theological concepts. Examining Genesis 1, he explored the implications of God's creation out of chaos, "earth was without form and void." The biblical idea of an initial chaos, from which 'chaos theology' was developed could clarify some theological problems, in reconciliation of theological and scientific worldviews. He applied this theology in dealing with the topic of creation as cosmic and biological evolution.

Science-Theology Dialogue:
His approach to this dialogue can be summarized in the following six points (page 3):
- Science and theology provide two worldviews of a single reality, the cosmos in which we live.
- Both worldviews have limitations that must be kept in mind: Science cannot deal with the 'beyond.'
- A dialogue between the two worldviews is possible, because the two disciplines have much in common.
- Dialogue is needed in order to achieve a deeper understanding of the world in which we live.
-Dialogue requires that each discipline is taken in its integrity. It is not permissible to reject a well-founded theory like the evolution theory in order to uphold a literal interpretation of the six days of creation in Gen. 1.
- The meeting ground for the two disciplines is to be found primarily in creation theology on the one side and cosmic and biological evolution on the other side.

Challenging Topics:
Any professional reviewer could be in trouble, accounting for the wide spectrum issues, the author keeps bombarding the reader with his wonderful insights. After spelling his basis for Science-Theology dialogue, he introduces his new approach of 'Chaos theology.' After exploring the scientific Worldviews on Cosmic and Biological evolution, he exposes the creation stories, while reviewing various ancient cosmologies, avoiding relating Genesis to the Heliopolitan account. He quotes proofs for the concept of continuing creation from OT and NT. Although he starts with Theophilus of Antioch early writings, he failed to identify the Alexandrian scholar, John Philoponus, Aristotle's most serious critic in the first seven centuries. Philoponus's application of Christian theology to physics, first to combine scientific cosmology, prefigured a new era in science. He briefly exposes Barth, Brunner, Pannenberg, Moltmann, Mcquarrie, Gunton, Peacocke, Polkinghorne creation theologies, and his fore runner Paleontologist De Chardin evolutionary creation.

Chaos, Alternative Theology:
Dr. Bonting develops his alternative creation theology, discussing Chaotic events, the problem of evil, God's action in the world, and the person and work of the Cosmic Christ. In the last chapters he find biblical proofs and reconcilliations in todays biological discoveries like gene therapy, cloning and stem cells, with ethical views.
He concludes his book with theological speculations on Chaos events: Punishment for sin, Extraterrestial life, and Future destiny, calling Tipler, Pannenberg, and Polkinghorne to discuss reserrection and eternal life.

Book Readership:
Dr. Bonting writes his books for theologians, who are not scientists and scientists with interest in theology, avoiding theological terms, while scientific terms are explained. The author expresses his hope that many readers will find the results useful for further thinking about the topics discussed, particularly those who gave up on their Christian faith.

Sjoerd L. Bonting:
Dr. Bonting, an ordained Anglican priest, has studied biochemistry at the University of Amsterdam, earning his Ph.D. 1952. In the US, he worked as a consultant for NASA at Ames Research Center, in preparation of biological research on the International Space Station, and taught at Iowa State University, U. of Minnesota, and U. of Illinois. He lectured extensively on science and theology, and wrote many scientific papers and eight books.
