You, Too, Can be Happy  Mar 9, 2008
Creating Your Own Way to Happiness is a self- help book intended to offer encouragement to those who might be feeling a little down or who might be facing a difficult situation in their lives and need some words of encouragement. This book's primary concern is to help individuals develop a sense of empowerment; to get people to realize that the power to improve lies within everyone and that no one else can make these changes and create happiness except for the individual person.

Most of the topics in this book are typical of a self- help book, with the authors talking about such personality traits and attributes as honesty, positive attitude, improved self- image, etc. The advice given can apply to anyone- including those who are married or single, although the emphasis seems to be placed on those who are in relationships or who would like to seek out a stable, emotionally rewarding relationship. The book points out that marriage isn't for everyone and it fully concedes that many people are perfectly happy living single. But the advice, for the most part, is best applied to those who are currently in a relationship or who want to be involved with a significant other.

While most of the advice in this book is pretty standard, there are a few surprises along the way. Chapters on subjects like improving negotiation skills and budgeting income and expenses are among the chapters that stand out from the pack not necessarily because of anything profound, but because they talk about subjects that are very different from the rest of the book. Most of the chapters in the book discuss introspective subjects, but these chapters delve into the external, and this makes them stand out.

The majority of the advice in this book is common sense. However, as much as I appreciate the enthusiasm of the authors, there are some bits of advice that will not necessarily work for everyone. The most obvious example is the book's emphasis on religion as a key ingredient in everyone's happiness. The book includes Bible verses in most every chapter and while many would agree that religion can, indeed, make some people happier, it is most certainly not a guarantee of happiness for all individuals. No matter what the topic, this book is quick to insert a Bible quote that attempts to make sense out of everything. This will certainly be met with approval from some readers, but others will find the addition of religion a waste of space.

Among the book's many attributes, the one thing I would have to criticize above all else is the questionnaires in the different chapters. There is certainly nothing wrong with asking readers a few questions in order for them to self- asses their own situation and discover what areas they need to improve. But the problem with the questionnaires in this book is that they do not include any type of analysis, scoring, interpretation, or anything else. The questions can pop up at any point in the reading and while they may have some relevant points that tie into the reading, there is no real discussion offered. It would have been better to place these questions in an appendix.

Overall, Creating Your Own Way to Happiness is a pretty good self- help guide that seeks to improve the confidence and happiness of everyone who reads it. The authors are very enthusiastic in their belief that everyone can, and should, be happy during their time on Earth and they are determined to do what they can to instill a feeling of inner peace within everyone who reads this book. Their advice is pretty ordinary, but their optimistic tone and friendly approach make this a book worthy of reading.
Whether you are happy or not depends on only one person---YOU!  Mar 7, 2008

Robert Bruce and Lee Ann Kirby have analyzed happiness in life from every angle from A to Z.; and have put it all into a neat book for anyone to use ,who wants to find out what things lead one down the path of happiness in life, as well as pointing to the pitfalls that must be avoided, not to ending up with a feeling of "Woe is me,how come everything seems to go wrong for me?"
The book would be perfect for group use with a facilitator or to use on a personal basis. Although ,in the end, there is no simple or single thing in this book that you probably have never heard before;but what it does is layout a process to follow particularly if you are facing the need to make a major ghange,of whatever kind, in your life, and are having fear and concern as to whether you are making the right choices, particularily when so many are available.
There are no guarantees in life choices;especially when your happiness is influenced by others. However;when situations occur,it will depend on you, yourself, if you decide to take the actions needed to resolve them;or allow yourself to continue to flounder in misery and ,even worse, blame someone or something else .
The author's stress what a great help faith is in one's journey through life.People who have a deep belief system would agree wholeheartily with them and find it an invaluable resource to turn to in dealing with the trials and tribulations as as well as joys, contentment and happiness.Even if there were no God,the invention of God would be the greatest accomplishment of mandkind.Throughout history, man's inventions have continued to come and amaze us.This will continue to happen in the future, but great as they may be,God will continue to be the "Light of te World. True, there are many wo prefer to to do without God and are happy, that is a choice each one has to make.
This book gives a very structured process to help you make choices of every kind as you go through life. Some decisions are of our own making while many are made by others and other events. How we deal with things that face us,however is up to us.
A few old sayings ought to convince you that you are responsible for your own happiness.

"Human happiness is having what you want, and wanting what you have."

"Happiness comes in the practice of virtue."

"The better part of happiness is to wish to be what you are."

Failing that, one can always adopt the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of "Peanuts"

"Happiness Is a Warm Puppy."
Has Some Useful and Informative Moments  Mar 5, 2008
"Creating Your Own Way to Happiness" is a book primarily aimed at people who are married, divorced, or widowed, who either want to work on their relationship, are considering a new relationship, or thinking about getting married. It also addresses people not in a relationship or not ready for a relationship. It encourages readers to take a good look at themselves in several ways: your negative side; relationships with friends; relationships with the opposite sex; self-motivation; your vision for your future; communication; your image and much more. The book also offer advice on how to deal with stress; coping with loneliness; caring for a sick loved one; coping with the death of a loved one; living single; and budgeting your income and expenses. Throughout the book there are "case histories" to help encourage readers to make a change.

"Creating Your Own Way to Happiness" offers readers a chance to take a good look at themselves and what they want out of life. I don't agree with everything the authors say - they rely heavily on biblical quotes and seem to believe you can't be happy if you are not in a relationship (with the opposite sex only) - but I still found some useful things in the book. The book has several useful questions that really make you think about yourself and your actions - such as making you look back at yourself as a child; focusing on your negative side; and your relationship with family and friends. Some of these questions are not easy to answer, because they make you look deep inside yourself and be honest, but they are very helpful. I found several chapters to be very useful, especially the ones on setting goals and listening to other people. I like the fact that the authors list six basic weaknesses and six basic strengths that people have - that was very useful. There are several catch phrases throughout the book that are helpful.

"Creating Your Own Way to Happiness" has some very informative and useful moments.
Book of wisdom  Mar 2, 2008
This book is a great tool for those starting out and preparing to get married, singles that are looking, or for those starting over after divorce or widowhood. The authors of this book write with experience, htry have both been widowed and had to start over, they were married for a combined 95 years before finding each other. They leave no stone unturned in the quest to show you how to successfully find happiness. From ensuring you are compatible with your partner to how to write a budget it is all in the book. Also the psychology of thinking positive, having goals, and keeping your mind focused in the present are also in this book. You will read brief stories of how others found their happiness after losing a marriage. If you are looking for happiness in a new relationship this book will give you the needed tools.
Creating your own way to happiness is easy...simply open this book  Feb 22, 2008
If you are anything like myself, you are continually on the search for something, anything that will help you find more peace of mind, improve your mood and quite frankly help you achieve happiness that seems ever elusive. In this day and age of low self image, uncaring individuals and a world that simply does not seem to care, this book is a gem when it comes to finding happiness within and applying it to ones life.

This, my friends is the book that we have been looking for. I have to be honest here, I've read a lot of books regarding self help, improvement and even achieving happiness within ones life, but this one is different. Not only does it actually help in common sense, easy to understand language but lessons within are easy to implement into ones life and feel totally natural besides. And on top of everything else, it speaks to each reader, reaching across age and background barriers to hit the basics and aid each reader on their own level.

Controlling stress had to be my favorite area in this book. As any parent and working mother can attest, keeping stress at a minimum as well as at a manageable level is the secret to a happier life and relationships besides. Again the common sense, no nonsense advice that appeals to any reader, despite his/her background is a factor that sets this book aside in terms of appeal and actually being worth the price.

I would strongly suggest anyone who is looking for a book that speaks not just to the mind but to the soul, to obtain this book. It is a winner and one that I promise will be off the shelf and in use far more than some of the glossy tomes we see far too often in bookstores all over the country. I think you'll be happy that you took the plunge into it's depths when you read this book, I know I certainly was!
