Truly endearing romance for character we've grown to love.  Sep 26, 2009
Courting Emma was such a satisfying conclusion to the Little Hickman Creek series. I am very impressed with how the author caused us to feel part of this community, and how well developed the characters are,so that we really care about them. This series is a wonderful example of Christian Historical Romance.

Courting Emma
By Sharlene MacLaren
Review by Roseanna White

Emma Browning is known the town over as a no-nonsense woman determined to live down the shame of having the town drunk for a father. She runs the only boarding house in town, and the rough-and-tumble occupants are a lot easier for her to handle than her newest boarder: one Reverend Jon Atkins, who she has known and not been intrigued by since childhood. Having him under her roof is unsettling--almost as unsettling as the mysterious letters she's been getting from an unknown woman in Chicago.

Jon Atkins thoroughly enjoys his role as pastor of Little Hickman's only church, especially the part that entails building relationships with the town's citizens. He feels a special pull toward the notorious Ezra Browning. . . one that has nothing at all to do with a very different pull toward the drunk's alluring daughter. He's determined to show Christ's love to them both. But does the Lord have something more in store for the unlikely group?

Courting Emma takes a candid look into the soul of abused children and their different ways of overcoming their pasts, presenting characters so realistic that you'll want to wrap your arms around them and tell them everything will be all right. Readers met both Emma and Jon in the previous books in this trilogy, and I for one was really looking forward to their story. The tale stood easily on its own in spite of being the third in the series, and the deep hearts of the characters and their struggles kept the pages turning at a fast clip.

Courting Emma is the best yet from Sharlene MacLaren. I've read all her books thus far and absolutely adored this one. Each chapter was a treasure, and I devoured the story as quickly as I could. Anyone who's read Shar's previous books will definitely want to pick this one up, and any lover of historical romance would love this story of romance, forgiveness, and budding faith.

A most enjoyable read  Jan 24, 2009
Courting Emma is set in the late 1800's with two main characters, Emma Browning and Pastor Jonathan Atkins. Emma Browning runs the local boarding house with some pretty gruff and rowdy men, though they respect her rules.

Emma's father, Ezra, is the town drunk. Every town back then had one. Unfortunately for Emma, her father was their town's drunk. And Emma was abused as a child, which in turn, made her very stubborn and defiant as an adult.

Emma grew up with Jon Atkins. When he came back, all religious-like, she had no use for his so-called `God'. He had never done anything for her. She had to work hard for what she had.

Then Jon does something the whole town thinks is strange. He sells his home to build a new church. But now, he needs somewhere to live and he wants to move into Emma's boarding house. Emma tries to avoid this, but eventually she gives in and allows the preacher to live there. His money was just as good as anyone else's.

Jon tries to ignore his growing `attachment' to Miss Emma Browning, but of course, our hearts have a mind of their own.

Then Emma begins to receive mysterious letters from a woman in Chicago who seems to know all about Ezra and Emma. Who is this woman? And what does she want from Emma?

MacLaren has a real talent for making her characters realistic, her settings so real, you almost feel like you are there. You can picture it all in your mind as you're reading. The engaging conversation is lively and the slang is perfect for the time period she is writing about. You can hear the accent. You can envision the characters. You'll fall in love with the little town of Little Hickman Creek.

Having never read a historical romance before, I was amazingly surprised at how I much I really enjoyed Courting Emma by Sharlene MacLaren. Not being a history buff myself, though I do enjoy movies that take place in the 19th century, I found I was hooked almost right away. And that says a lot in itself. A most enjoyable read and I wish now, I could've read the first two books in this series first. I intend to now.
Best of the whole series  Dec 18, 2008
"Courting Emma" is the third and last book of the "Little Hickman Series." Emma Browning owns the only proper living establishment in Little Hickman, Kentucky; better known as a boarding house. She spends all her free time making a home for a bunch of crude, loudmouthed bachelors. Despite her successes, she is continually embarrassed by her drunk of a father, Ezra, who roams the town while intoxicated. From the time his wife died, Ezra took to the bottle and was a slave to it. Never mind that he had a child to raise, his bad habits came first. Emma spends the first sixteen years of her life bearing the brunt of his abuse until Clara Abbot invites her to live with her. When Clara dies, she leaves her boarding house to the young woman. Emma is as happy as she allows herself to be. While many of her friends know the Lord personally, she is much too embittered to give God as second thought. That is until the Reverend Jon Atkins asks her for a room to rent. Even though they grew up together, she no longer considers him a close friend and works hard to keep her distance from him. When Jon befriends her father and works with him to do away with his bad habits, she scoffs at the idea of Ezra actually turning over a new leaf. To her annoyance, Jon takes a room at her boarding house and continually interferes with her life. Not only that, Emma receives these mysterious letters from a woman named Grace. Through many letters, Grace encourages Emma to read the Bible and later on answers many of Emma's spiritual questions. When Jon is trapped in a cave and needs time to heal, Emma cares for him and the two grow closer. Through his new friendship with Ezra, Jon learns that the older man is dying and informs Emma. He is able to convince her to take in her father and nurse him while he is ailing. The walls around Emma's heart begin to crumble and she is softened towards both her father and Jon. Through her letters from Grace, she also discovers why her father behaved the way he did in the past. That Clara Abbot was her grandmother, and unbeknownst to him, Ezra's mother. And that Grace is her cousin. When Emma invites Grace to visit, Grace takes her up on the offer and stays on awhile. Through Christ, Emma is able to forgive her father, but is too late in telling him and he dies. Jon realizes that he has loved Emma from the time they were children and asks her to marry him.
"Courting Emma" is a beautiful story, and the message of faith is woven in delicately. Even though I am a believer in Christ, sometimes when there is a minister in a story, nine chances out of ten I find him too cliché or too preachy. But with the character of Jon Atkins, that wasn't the case at all. He was a breath of fresh air and probably my favorite of all the heroes in the "Little Hickman Series." Emma wasn't the only one who suffered at the hands of an abusive father. Jon's father was harsh too but unfortunately the two never reconciled. The way Sharlene MacLaren contrasted two people who originated in abusive homes was interesting. Unlike Emma, Jon found peace in Christ and was able to move past his bitterness.
A Touching Story!  Dec 3, 2008
Courting Emma is a moving story set in the late 1800's in a small town that touches on forgiveness and overcoming a painful past to live a future of promise. When you first meet Emma she appears hard and tough because she's had to be. Surviving a childhood of abuse and learning to make do on own, Emma doesn't trust others easily. So when Pastor Jonathon sets his sights on her, he has his work cut out for him in winning Emma's heart.

The characters have great depth and a reader can't help but care about them. While reading this book I could sympathize with Emma and I wanted to see her emotionally healed. I cheered Jonathon on in his pursuit of her, enjoying his patience and endurance as he slowly wore down her defenses. The pacing of this book is perfect, the story unfolds in a rhythm that will keep readers turning the pages. This is a keeper!
