Overview
Fourteen Presbyterian scholars enter into conversations with the confessions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and examine the major theological themes that make the confessions such foundational commitments of faith. This collection of insightful essays provides readers with a clear understanding of the confessions from different periods of the church's life. These conversations with the confessions found in the PC(USA)'s Book of Confessions include some illuminating commentary on why they were written and demonstrate how they can be used to address major theological issues. This important work will help scholars, pastors, and church leaders interested in studying the Reformed tradition appreciate the role of the confessions in shaping Christian life and faith today.

Useful Exploration of Continuing Relevance  Feb 3, 2010
This book will be of interest primarily to people curious about the continuing relevance of the Reformed Christian confessions considered authoritative (somehow or other) for members of the Presbyterian Church (USA). That's a particular audience, indeed! The good news is that the authors of the articles in this book (most of whom are academic theologians) seem all genuinely to find that these confessions (from the Apostles' Creed through twentieth century confessions) are still very much relevant for the church, and in many ways: for example, how we worship, how we grow in learning about God, how we can understand ourselves better through the lens of the confessions). The articles seem for the most part to chart a middle way between the "liberal" and "conservative" branches of the PC(USA). If anything, they seem overall to gravitate toward the orthodox, traditionalist side. The articles do not have in mind other academics so much as people with some familiarity with the historic creeds and Reformed confessions, who would like to learn more about them and who would like to see how and why they still matter. This could be a stimulating book to read along with the confessions, as part of an ongoing adult education class in church.
