Thomas Paine was born in England in 1737 and worked as a schoolteacher, storekeeper, and customs inspector before moving to Philadelphia in 1774. He quickly acquired a reputation as a journalist and published his hugely successful and influential pamphlet Common Sense in 1776. The Crisis, written when Paine was a soldier in the darkest days of the revolution--with its famous opening words, -These are the times that try men's souls---called for perseverance and prevented Washington's army from disintegrating. To honor him for defending the French Revolution in Rights of Man, France made him a citizen and elected him to their constitutional convention. He died in 1809.

Common Sense, The Rights of Man and Other Essential  May 9, 2010
Witen from his personal papers. and take a while to get use to the writing and old English meaning. But overall worth reading you get and understanding that we as an early colony are having same isses today with this OBAMA admin as the colonies had back then. As they say history repeats itself.
Essential Reading  Apr 21, 2010
Thomas Paine's arguments defending human rights and political revolution, as well as his opposition to hereditary and abusive government, are an absolute classic. Some may find Paine to lack a certain level of depth in his analysis, but the strength, clarity, and historical significance of his arguments are very rarely matched. This is an absolute must read for anyone interested in history or politics.
Essential American Reader  Mar 14, 2010
I bought this with the Federalist Papers and the Anti-Federlist Papers. They form a basic part of American thought at the time of our founding.

Thomas Paine's work was the spark that ignited Americans to seek their own way. You can't understand the American mind of 1776 without reading this book.
Just as advertised  Feb 7, 2010
A classic. Too bad Americans don't know this guy. Bought it for my European nephew for him to understand the USA.
Common Sense  Jan 30, 2010
Surprisingly, this is an incredible book to read. Glenn Beck does a great job blending history, law, money and politics. He illustrates how out-of-control our government is and what the future ramifications of this are if we do not change our course. We are at a crossroads and what we do now will determine our future success or failure. I was surprised that this is not an anti-Demorcrat or pro-Republican book. It really comes down to assessing whether we will be better off with more government or less. This is a must-read book for every American before going to the polls! Read it!
