Reviews - What do our customers think?
Melinda Doolittle  Jun 30, 2009
Melinda Doolittle has voice that is a gift from God. I was very pleased with this item.
This didn't cut it for me....!  Jun 24, 2009
I loved Melinda on American Idol but I did notice that her style was in my opinion not very current. This album is like a mixture of Doris Day and Leadbelly neither of which are my taste. Melinda has the ability but sorry to say this album didn't do it for me. I sincerely hope that her next album is more enjoyable and up to date in style (I'm almost 60 so I'm not thinking teenybopper stuff!).
Melinda is a beautiful singer, but this was bland  Jun 23, 2009
Like so many others, I waited anxiously for this album because I thought Melinda was the best contestant on AI; she should have won. But, I was sorely disappointed.

I read a number of reviews for this album, and the retaliatory comments under some negative reviews. Potential buyers may assume a small number of folks didn't like the album but it must be good because there are so many more positive reviews from devotees. I think instead there are a lot more people like me who thought it was boring, put it on a shelf and forgot about it. Browsing this site it popped up again and I remembered how disappointing it was. Melinda has a powerful, well-trained voice (reminded me of Chaka Kahn actually), but there is no power on this album. The songs run together without distinction, and her vocals never shine. As another reviewer pointed out, there is nothing "radio-ready" here: no stand-out songs begging to be singles, no catchy lyrics or refrains you find yourself singing along to, no dance tracks and no trace of that sass we saw on stage. Even "Declaration of Love" was better covered by Celine Dion! A real waste of talent.

Some have mentioned that the writing is high quality and "soulful" and everything doesn't have to be pop, or tailored for radio. Unfortunately, that kind of thinking is what keeps Lady Gaga and Katy Perry on the top of the charts, and puts Melinda in jeopardy of going back to back-up singing. I hope the studio gives her a second shot, as I would certainly give her another try; soulful doesn't have to be boring.
Coming Back To YouL Melinda Doolittle  May 31, 2009
This CD is TOTALLY AWESOME!!! I knew when she was on American Idol that she was going places. She was always one of my favorites! This CD will keep you rocking all day long...go Melinda!!!
COMING BACK TO Only A Portion Of Herself  May 29, 2009
I'll admit....I never thought I'd buy a record from a former "American Idol" contestant. Though I've enjoyed the show since Season One, no one (aside from Nadia Turner....why hasn't anyone signed her and turned her into the next soul/rock superstar?!?) has really moved me. Not until Melinda Doolittle.
Much like Miranda Lambert on NASHVILLE STAR, I knew that, win or lose, Doolittle was going to be a star....and that I would buy her album the day it came out (In all honesty, I'll also be buying the new ones from Michael Johns and Carly Smithson when they come out in June and this Fall, respectively!).
So what is the final verdict on COMING BACK TO YOU? More pluses than minuses, however there is one major problem. But we'll get to that a little bit later.
Things kick off with a tamer, more G-rated version of "(The) Fundamental Things." While not as gritty or sensual as Bonnie Raitt's excellent 1998 take, there's still a swagger to Doolittle's performance that is intoxicating. Her voice bobs and weaves, pulling you in and making you smile. A great way to start things off, and definitely one of CBTY's high points!
The same can't be said about the strident "It's Your Love." This overwrought soul belter is a prime example of COMING's one big fault; in trying to make her the next Labelle or Knight or Franklin, the producers have sucked some of the individualistic charm out of Doolittle that made her so special on IDOL. She's at best when she's got a smile on her face and a glint in her eye (that's who SHE is!), not when she's trying to break glass in a divaesque manner.
Things rebound brilliantly with the sexy, smooth title track. A slow-jam, yet spirited, arrangement cushions a slinky lead vocal. Toss in clever lyrics ("Wonder what the future brings/Fortune tellers and time machines/I'll predict what they'll predict for me/That I keep coming back to you") and it's all good. Doolittle amps things up by song's end, but it's totally controlled, thus adding extra "oomph!" without overpowering. Another high point!
"Declaration Of Love" is a pretty generic soul rave-up. Doolittle provides a nice enough lead vocal, but this is the sort of song someone with her vocal prowess can sing with one lung tied behind her other words, nothing really special.
The exact opposite can be said about the gently swaying "The Best Of Everything." Smooth arrangement, stylish instrumentation and a smokin' lead vocal all come together in a way that is equal parts sweet, sultry and sophisticated.
"Wonderful" has a relaxed, easy-going groove going on, with Doolittle's voice swooping and soaring. There's power here, but there's also grace, and that's a potent combination. A stellar vocal showcase.
Doolittle has always come across as so sweet and down to earth that the slightly snarky protagonist of "Dust My Broom" seems a little hard to fathom. Still, there are some fun elements to the track. The spirited girl-group backing vocals add a nice touch, and there's a great vibe going on with the arrangement. All in all, though, there's something about the cut that just seems....forced, a musical square peg in a lyrical round hole.
The second of three Sammy Cahn songs on the disc, the gauzy "I'll Never Stop Loving You" is nice enough, but Doolittle actually loses herself here...if you were to hear this on the radio or on a jukebox, you might think it was Natalie Cole during her UNFORGETTABLE days. Once again, Melinda Doolittle is too strong an artist to be anyone but Melinda Doolittle!
Things get back on track beautifully with the perfectly blended "I Will Be." A gorgeous lead vocal, a muted (yet strong) arrangement and smart lyrics ("I choose to keep my feet/Upon the beaten path/Never cross the open field/For the one snake in the grass/But I'd rather risk my heart/Than never get the chance") all come together to form a potentially huge hit single. CBTY's best cut!
"If I'm Not In Love" is the absolute perfect mix of all of Doolittle's considerable atrengths and a classic, steely soul vibe. Mark my word, if she had performed this song on IDOL, it would have been one of her "WOW!!" moments. Gutsy, riveting and heartfelt, this is a stunner from start to finish!
I'm really on the fence with "Walkin' Blues" times I love it, other times I think it's sort of formulaic. There's no denying the infectious groove, but, once again, Doolittle can perform a track like this with her eyes close....there's no stretch here whatsoever, and Doolittle is someone who needs to keep stretching herself.
"We Will Find A Way" has a nice feel to it. Gospel-tinged, M.D.'s voice dances over the lyrics. Powerful, from the gut, but intimate and honest, this is Doolittle at her most earthy and genuine, totally knocking it out of the park.
Things wrap up with the third Cahn track, "Wonder Why." Doolittle manages to make it her own, while still retaining a timeless quality. There's no denying Doolittle is as much a jazz singer as she is a soul singer, and this lively, lovely cut proves it more than any other. A real beaut!
So....where does Melinda Doolittle go from here? COMING BACK TO YOU proves that she can pretty much sing anything, but it also proves that she doesn't have to try to be the "Next" anyone....she's a true star in her own right. Hopefully, her next release will let that star shine even brighter (As with all my reviews, I'm docking the disc half a star for not including the lyrics).
