Publishers Description
Thor Ramsey (hereafter known as the Jon Stewart of the theological world) defends the essentials of the Christian faith in this volume of comedy for the thinking person. Armed with only a laptop and a rapier wit, he defends the inspiration of the Bible ("all Scripture is inspired by God"--in other words, when you tell someone off, quote the Bible), the doctrine of total depravity (calling someone out for their sins is a tricky business, especially if you don't know how to operate a bullhorn), and the supremacy of Christ (or why Thor's God is bigger than your god), along with a host of other essential doctrines of the Christian faith. Packed with funny stories and hard-hitting truths, this comprehensive collection of biblical insights and personal anecdotes will surprise readers, destroy their misconceptions and leave them wanting more. For readers looking alternatives to the conversation of traditional faith, or those who have a taste for fearless (and hilarious) honesty, "A Comedian's Guide to Theology" will permanently change how we all look at Christianity--or at least offer a good-hearted shove out of the box (or back in the box, if that's where you need to be). "What a supreme pleasure to read a book that I find powerfully honest, theologically kapow dead-on, and incredibly and ACTUALLY funny funny funny funny This book is so brilliantly funny and dead-on that if I weren't a very mature Christian I might be jealous." --Eric Metaxas, New York Times best-selling author of "Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery," and former editor of "The Yale Record."

humor at its best in form, content, and goal!  Nov 30, 2009
Thor Ramsey's "A Comedian's Guide to Theology" is a brilliantly funny work! I am VERY picky when it comes to media that many claim to be humorous (movies, books, stand-up comedians, etc.). In many instances, I find what many consider "funny" to be humorless, crass, or uninspired. However, I took a chance on this book after thumbing through it for the better part of an hour in a Borders. I found myself laughing out loud and sharing whole passages with my wife while in the store. So, though there are no critical accolades on the back cover of the book (a travesty if you ask me!), I purchased it. Ramsey's book was so funny and theologically compelling that I inhaled it in a week.

And, yes, I did just use the phrase "funny and theologically compelling" with reference to an evangelically-minded book. Usually, if we're talking "funny" and evangelically-minded, we're usually descending into a work whose so-called humor compromises and/or waters down sober, biblically sound theology. But Ramsey does no such thing here. Ramsey's humor underscores his commitment to biblical and doctrinal acuity. Ramsey's humor hammers home some crucial Christian theology that has fallen out of favor among those sectors of the church that are courting or have already fallen into apostasy (especially "Damn Theology: Why Hell is a Good Idea"). In this way, Ramsey's humor serves as a vehicle for critique of folks in- and outside of the church. This is a great and biblical usage of humor (check out the Old Testament prophets), and Ramsey, for the most part, does it well. Much of Ramsey's humor is driven by a joyful zeal over being a Christ-follower.

If you can't tell, I highly recommend "A Comedian's Guide to Theology". Oh, and it's also worth your money because Ramsey occasionally takes on two sectors of the American church that need to taken down a few pegs:
(1) The Emergent Movement and (2) The Neo-Reformed Movement (both of whom need more take-downs due to their abysmal theological formulations).
Great Stuff  Oct 11, 2009
This is full of Christian truths and humor. Quite a combination.

I had seen Thor Ramsey before on a DVD and knew that he is very funny. Now I also know that he is also a thinking Christian who is well versed in a wide variety of topics. I read this on my Kindle which I am not very good with highlighting items yet. Had I known how good it was going to be, I would have taken some notes. There are several very astute observations particularly about post modernism and the emerging church.

I plan to re-read this and take some notes. It is well worth reading both from both thought provoking and entertainment perspectives.
Thanks for the Theology, Thor  Jun 26, 2009
A Comedian's Guide to Theology is an incredibly funny, insightful book. Author Thor Ramsey explores Christianity in a relevant, reverent yet hysterical manner. He takes on the Emergent Church, doubt, sin, and misconceptions of the Bible with an attitude of faith and a penchant for footnotes. He gives graceful advice, with responsible scriptural back-up and extraordinary humor. Each chapter provides opportunities for introspection and spiritual growth, along with great belly laughs. I didn't want the book to end.
funny and honest  May 29, 2009
A good book, written by a very funny Christian comedian. The book started out a little too "jokey" for me, but, as the book went along, the one-liners tapered off and it got to be a really good, thoughtful, humorous, book. I particularly liked Thor's view on people using Jesus' name (pages 111 - 113). Excellent observations. He has lots of honest observations and funny comments. A good read, I really enjoyed the book.
Can't wait for "A Comedians Guide to World Religions"...  May 7, 2009
Thor's book is incredible. More than just a humor book, the stories and humorous anecdotes help to drive the points he makes home in a way that we can all relate to. You'll really get a lot out of this book, especially if you have a heart for God and how his truth applies to everyday life, and why it is so important that we don't stray from the heart of our faith...or take ourselves and our own ideas too seriously.
