Overview
Late in the fourteenth century, Thomas a Kempis joined a powerful spiritual movement sweeping Europe that was known as "The Brothers of the Common Life." While plagues devastated the population and turmoil tore apart the Church, the Holy Spirit moved across the continent among everyday people, bringing thousands together in small communities to recreate the communal life of the early believers. In this setting, Thomas lived a life of deep prayer, devotion, and service to God. It was the passion of his writing that galvanized the dramatic reform movement, all but saving the spiritual fire of Christianity in his own time. After the Bible, The Imitation of Christ is said to be the most widely read spiritual book of the world. It has helped countless believers to experience the living Spirit of Jesus Christ like a living flame in the soul's depths. David Hazard has arranged the words and thoughts of Thomas a Kempis into a forty-day devotional to help you meet Jesus in the quiet sanctuary of your soul. . .and carry Him into the traffic and noise and challenge of today's world-with you and in you. . .so the world may hear the voice and know the graceful beauty of the living Lord.

More About David Hazard

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Thomas a Kempis (1380-1471) was a medieval Dutch monk steeped in the mystical tradition of his time. A member of the Brothers of the Common Life, he was ordained a priest in 1413. His well-loved work, The Imitation of Christ, was written between 1420 and 1427 presumably as four booklets intended to instruct the novices of his community. It is one of Christian history's best-known works on spiritual devotion. This small book sidesteps academic pretension to consider larger truths. "A poor peasant who serves God," Thomas wrote, "is better than a proud philosopher who . . . ponders the courses of the stars."

Father Dennis Billy, C.Ss.R., is a teacher, writer, and poet. Ordained a Redemptorist priest in 1980, he taught the history of moral theology and Christian spirituality at the Alphonsian Academy of Rome's Pontifical Lateran University for more than twenty years, reaching the rank of Ordinary Professor. In 2008 he was installed as the John Cardinal Krol Chair of Moral Theology as a scholar-in-residence at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania. He also serves as the Karl Rahner Professor of Catholic Theology at the Graduate Theological Foundation in Mishawaka, Indiana. Raised in Staten Island, New York, and educated there through high school in local Catholic schools, he graduated from Dartmouth College and went on to receive four master's degrees, as well as doctorates from Harvard University, the Pontifical University of St. Thomas, and the Graduate Theological Foundation. Billy is the author of numerous books and articles, both popular and scholarly.

After serving six years in the United States Marine Corps, William Creasy received his bachelor of arts degree from Arizona State University in 1974, summa cum laude; his master of arts degree from Arizona State University in 1976; and his doctorate in English literature from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1982. He retired from the UCLA English faculty in 2005 after serving more than twenty years.

Creasy has been chosen as an honorary Mortar Board member at UCLA; he has been appointed as a member of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Spirituality Commission; and he has served as Scholar in Residence at Sinai Temple in Los Angeles, the first Christian academic to hold that appointment. The San Diego Ecumenical Council has also honored him for his teaching and his work in ecumenism. Creasy has spoken at countless professional gatherings, and has served as keynote speaker at such functions as the Episcopal Bishops' Conference.

Nice Editing  Apr 23, 2005
This book is a great way to enter into Christian spirituality.

Why?

First, because this book is deeply personal and keenly insightful. A Kempis' work is quite beautiful on its own but Hazard editing "for Today's Reader" makes it much more accessible (maybe someday someone will do this same thing with Oswald Chambers famous devotional book!). I think this is important because for many people the last thing they need to do when doing their devotional is to have to figure out the meanings of archaic or uncommon words.

Second, the main thrust of a Kempis' writing is to help aid the Christian in the fight against the Adversary. Today, more than ever, many people choose to follow Jesus without realizing the bumps in the road, chief of which is Satan. Hazard helps the reader see this danger by his careful choosing of passages that deal specifically with this subject.

Third, at the end of each chapter is a short prayer that is italicized to set it apart from the rest of the text. This too is particularly helpful for young or lapsed Christians because it (re)introduces them to prayer. Prayer, like most things in life, does not simply develop in a vacuum; it is learned. The best way is to have an experienced prayer partner to lead you along the way. A viable alternative is to pray the prayers of other devoted Christians who came before you.

All in all this is a great book to have!
