Publishers Description
It's 1876, and 20-year-old Mattie Flynn is determined to make a fresh start after fleeing from her sinister boss in the gambling house where she was employed as a singer. Mattie travels to Deadwood, South Dakota, in search of her younger brother, who went ahead of her in hopes of making a fortune in the gold mines. All Mattie wants is a safe and respectable life for the two of them, but that doesn't seem to be her destiny as she faces more heartache and trials. Will the suspicious bottles of gold dust from her brother's claim be the key to her future...or does the handsome street preacher, who is always turning the other cheek, truly hold the answers to her deepest longings?

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Enjoyed the book  Jan 25, 2010
Interesting characters. Love to read good Christian novels. This was the first time I had read anything by Stephanie Whitson. (I liked the book cover). Will have to purchase more of her books.
A CLAIM OF HER OWN  Jan 21, 2010
A CLAIM OF HER OWN takes place in the mining town of Deadwood, South Dakota. Mattie O'Keefe is fleeing an abusive relationship with her boss while in search of her brother who tells her of the riches he has discovered in the gold fields. Once Mattie arrives in Deadwood, all of Mattie's plans change. She soon finds herself artfully nicknamed Matt the Miner. As she determines to make a go of it on her brother's claim, she finds herself drawn to the people of Deadwood, except for Aron Gallagher, a young preacher. With her skills for sizing people up, she believes Aron is hiding something. She doesn't think that preaching is his only trade and soon finds out her observations are correct. But, she's not the only one who can read a person, and what it is they are hiding. Mattie and Aron agree to keep their impressions of each other between the two of them, and soon Mattie finds herself intrigued by the man of God.
A CLAIM OF HER OWN was a good read, though a felt a little cheated by the lack of interaction between Mattie and Aron. Books that leave romantic discoveries to the final chapters frustrate me. I wanted to enjoy Mattie and Aron as a couple, instead of two single characters ignoring their feelings for each other. The cast of supporting characters Ms. Whitson created were very enjoyable and added dimension to the story.
Everyone wishes for a do-over  Jul 31, 2009
"Not a soul in Deadwood doesn't have something in their past they'd like to forget. Shoot, there's not a person alive doesn't have something in their past they'd like to forget."

What if you could leave all your mistakes behind and start completely over? That's what Mattie O'Keefe is searching for in the town of Deadwood where everyone is searching for something. Searching for hope, hoping to strike it rich, and above all hoping to start anew. But the past, as well as the hardscrabble way of the West, has a way of catching up to the hopefuls, and Mattie is no exception.

With all the essential elements of a good western: white hats, black hats, plucky women, good cooking, legends, multicultural wild (yet lovable) characters and even a little gunslinging are perfectly married to the essential elements of Christian fiction: genuine faith and friends, and God's love and grace.

What I appreciated was that our plucky heroine wasn't felled by sap and sentiment. Mattie is a strong and determined character who is gradually softened by those genuine friends and she learns faith by witnessing the grace of God.

This book won't sit long on my shelf, I already have a list of friends waiting to borrow it and I am already searching for more to read from this author.

A Pleasant Read  Jun 28, 2009
What I liked most about this book was the attention to historical detail, without letting the detail overwhelm the story. I enjoyed reading about Mattie and thought her motivation for her independent spirit and skepticism of God was very believable. Overall this is an enjoyable book--although I would have liked to have seen more romance between the main characters.
Surviving the West  Jun 23, 2009

Deadwood. The name sounds hopeless and depressing (and it brings to mine the TV show). Only the promise of gold could bring people out to the prairie wilderness. Two women are out on the prairie with different personalities trying to survive. I felt that the book starts off a little slow. It took me a while to get into the story as well as fully relate with the characters. For a majority of the book, I didn't feel connected with Mattie at all. Instead I found myself drawn to Swede more. In fact, I actually preferred reading Swede's story over Mattie's. Her story could have been a different book in itself. Mattie's background makes for the more interesting story for herself. The villain that comes after her is a good one, not type casted or stereotyped for the day and age. The historical details about the time period was well researched and portrayed well. The time period was a harsh time to be a woman, and for a single woman especially it would have been a struggle just to survive. While it does portray a lot of myths from the west (ie gunfighters, saloon fights, miners) I felt they were all shown realistically and added color to the story.

I felt though that the romance story was lacking in this book. The characters didn't really interact or at least the romance took place in the background when we weren't looking. Swede's romance was more out in the open and even then I felt was more romantic and interesting. Still I'm a fan of Stephanie Whitson's books so I enjoyed this one overall. If you're a fan of her other books or the West in general, you'll like this one too.
