Item Description...
Overview
Robin Gill argues that moral communities should take center stage in ethics. This book examines recent evidence about church communities in relation to faith, moral order and love, and shows that churchgoers are distinctive in their attitudes, beliefs and behavior. Some attitudes change over time, and there are several moral disagreements among different groups of churchgoers. Moreover, their values and behavior are shared by many nonchurchgoers also. The distinctiveness of church communities in the modern world is thus real but relative, and is crucial for the task of Christian ethics.

Publishers Description
This text argues that once moral communities (such as churchgoers) take centre stage in ethics - as they do in virtue ethics - then there should be a greater interest in sociological evidence about these communities. This book examines recent evidence, gathered from social attitude surveys, about church communities, in particular their views on faith, moral order and love. It shows that churchgoers are distinctive in their attitudes and behaviour. Some of their attitudes change over time, and there are a number of obvious moral disagreements between different groups of churchgoers. Nonetheless, there are broad patterns of Christian beliefs, teleology and altruism which distinguish churchgoers as a whole from non-churchgoers. However, the values, virtues, moral attitudes and behaviour of churchgoers are shared by many other people as well. The distinctiveness of church communities in the modern world is thus real but relative, and is crucial for the task of Christian ethics.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
churchgoing and christianethics  Aug 15, 2000
This is a highly disappointing work. It relies on statistical studies (not compiled by the author) of attitudes among churchgoers. The churchgoers report on their own attitudes. So, if the researcher asks, for example, for the churchgoers' attitude on television violence or kindness to animals, the churchgoer describes his own attitude. Not surprisingly, people say what they are expected to say. Predictably regular churchgoers are less likely to approve of television violence and more likely to approve of kindness to animals. After all, this is what Christians are supposed to believe. Far more interesting would have been a study of Churchgoers' behaviour in reality. Are churchgoers in fact more likely to turn off violent programmes, be kind to stray dogs or, indeed be pleasant and unselfish towards their neighbour? Sadly, Dr. Gill is content with accepting the obvious and ignoring all the fascinating possibilites which a more profound and original study would have produced.
