Item Description...
Why are there so many more professing Christians than churchgoing Christians? Is it because something is wrong with the church? Perhaps that's part of the picture. But Philip Yancey insists there is another part. In this candid, thought-provoking account, he reveals the reasons behind his own journey back from skepticism to wholehearted participation in the church, and weighs the church's human failings against its compelling excellencies as the body of Christ.

Publishers Description

Insights from Philip Yancey s personal pilgrimage away from and back to the church. Why are there so many more professing Christians than churchgoing Christians? Is it because something is wrong with the church? In his candid, thought-provoking manner, award-winning author Philip Yancey reveals the reasons behind his own journey back from skepticism to wholehearted participation in the church, and weighs the church s human failings against its compelling worth as the body of Christ. Yancey does not whitewash the church s faults, rather he sets them against the overwhelming balance of its strengths: its heart for God, its care for the hurting, its outreach to the lost, and its value as family and community."

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Church:Why Bother?  Jan 3, 2007
I thought it was well written and thought provoking. Attending church and Bible Study have become an important part of my daily life. I really enjoy Philip Yancy's writing style and think he has a good sense of what are the important issues that are facing Christians today in our society.
Not the Author's Best Work  Sep 16, 2005
I have read several of Philip Yancey's books. He writes in a way that is very compelling for me and frequently makes some very tangible connections with the reader that make you walk away viewing your spiritual life or Bible text in a totally different way. Here however I was disappointed that large sections of this short book are almost repeated verbatim out of other books he has written. I also thought that the proposed answers to the question, "Church: Why Bother?" were not that clearly stated or summarized. This book is no where near the caliber of "The Jesus I Never Knew".
Church as a Personal Pilgrimage  Aug 9, 2005
Yancey writes in his usual straightforward, honest style, drawing upon his own childhood and journey as a "church goer." It's an easy read. You can read it in an hour. He reminds us that despite its failures and blunders, the church is still the main avenue God uses to nourish ourselves and each other. Just as no one has discovered another way to learn to walk except to do it and pick oneself up after falling, so the church body keeps on going. God seems to put up with us, and we should put up with each other. I guess it boils down to what someone told me as a teenager. "When you find the perfect church, don't join it. You'll spoil it."
Yancey inspires us again!  Jan 11, 2004
As usual, Philip Yancey explores the issue of church worship in detail. He boldly surveys the subjects of corporate worship, fellowship, rejection, acceptance, Biblical studies, etc. He is one of the best Christian writers of this generation and continues to amaze me with his profound and prolific insights. A very interesting book to say the least.
The book many Fundies would love to hate  Oct 30, 2002
In this work Yancey traces his Fundamentalist heritage from a conservative WASP church in Georgia, through a Bible-believing seminary in SC, to his ministry at a multicultural church in Chicago pastored by an ex-Bob Jones University grad. By applying the principle of grace in a thoroughgoing way, he shows up the discrepancies of faith and practice in many churches and colleges of the Bible Belt and brings to bear the lessons from Jesus' condescension and ministry.

Unfortunately, Yancey quotes approvingly from Roman Catholic sources and shows a lack of discernment in that area. But overall, this book's a devastating critique of American Fundamentalism in the past several decades. It promises to be a powerful tool in the reformation of a movement that began well in the 1800s-early 1900s.
