The Significance of Anointing Oils
The English word "anoint" derives from the Latin word "inunctus", which means to "smear with oil". When something is to be anointed, it is to be set apart and dedicated to serve a purpose for God, and to be made sacred, or to be endowed with special gifts and God's grace. You will find the use of anointing oil throughout the Bible. Some important Biblical events that mention anointing oils include:
- When Jacob consecrated the pillar before God and named it "Bethel" - anointing it with oil
- King David is mentioned as being anointed with oil at least a few times in the Bible. Psalm 89:20-21, wherein God declares, “I have found David my servant and anointed him with My holy oil. My hand will always be with him.” David also anointed himself with oil to help overcome the grief of his child dying.
- One of the most memorable scriptures involving anointing oil is when Mary of Bethel uses a jar of very expensive perfume, which was pure spikenard oil, to pour the oil over Jesus' feet and head.
- When Jesus was born, he was brought gifts of frankincense and myrrh. And after Jesus' death on the cross, his body was treated with different aloes and myrrh.
Churches Still Use Anointing Oil
Many churches still use anointing oils for special reasons, whether they are praying for the sick, consecrating and altar or building - as dedicating it to God, or to send of a member on a special task. Most churches prefer to purchase their anointing oils that come from the Holy Land.
