Item Description...
Despite the follies, foibles, and idiosyncracies of their parishioners, Theophilus Henry Simmons, a young pastor, and his wife, Essie Lee Lane, are determined to hold their congregation together and teach its members the true meaning of faith and love. A first novel. Reprint.

Publishers Description
Mississippi, 1963. Essie Lee Lane is a small-town girl who doesn't take "stuff" from nobody. Yet even she isn't ready for the Reverend Theophilus Simmons, one of the South's most fiery and respected young preachers. Down-to-earth, caring, and oh-so-fine, he's everything Essie never thought she'd find in a man, and he realizes she is everything a pastor needs in a wife. But Essie and Theophilus soon discover that dealing with the contentious members of Theophilus's church will be no honeymoon-especially when a couple of First Lady wannabes and a few blasphemous preachers enter the picture. With their parishioners in turmoil and their denomination facing a major scandal, Essie and Theophilus must put their faith and love to the ultimate test as they struggle to lead their congregation to God's sweetest rewards.

Michele Andrea Bowen grew up in St. Louis, MO, with a large, church-going family. She graduated from Washington University in St. Louis, and also the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked in Social Work, Public Health, and Education.
Michele became one of the groundbreaking writers in the area of contemporary African American Christian Fiction when her first novel, Church Folk, was published in the summer of 2001. She continued to delight her readers with down-home, funny, uplifting, and heartwarming novels like Second Sunday, Holy Ghost Corner, Up at the College, and More Church Folk.
Now, she will reach out to readers with a brand new three-part novel series called "The Pastor's Aide Club." Pastor Needs A Boo, the first novel in the series, will be out this summer (2014). It answers, finally, all of the questions readers have had about Pastor-FBI Agent, Rev. Denzelle Flowers.
But don't worry, the other two novels in "The Pastor's Aide Club" series, Praying Like Crazy and The Sunday Soul Singles Club, are sure to set to rest' questions readers have had about Charles Robinson and Veronica Washington, along with Charles' employee, Bay Bowser. When readers finish having some serious laughter-filled shaking my head' moments from Pastor Needs A Boo, they will definitely be ready for a second and third helping of Miss Michele's contemporary church folk' with Praying Like Crazy and The Sunday Soul Singles Club.

Michele Andrea Bowen currently resides in Durham, in the state of North Carolina.

Wow, what a delicious, precious story!  Jan 17, 2008
Like others, I did not know what to expect. As a Christian, I did not want to read any book about church folk! However, my coworker gave me the book. I could not put it down. I have never read a book written with so much integrity and wisdom. I got totally engrossed in Theophilus and Essie, not to mention all of the wonderfully juicy twists and turns! This book is amazing! I want to read more of Ms. Bowen's work!
CHURCH FOLK  Oct 20, 2007
This story left a smile on my face. It was a true depiction of what can go on in the lives of church folk. The cast of characters are quite lovable and leave a memorable impression. This book was a pleasure to read.
Laugh out loud Funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Oct 1, 2007

The Truth!  Aug 25, 2007
I loved this book by Ms. Bowen. She has a way of telling the story like itTI IS! She had me rolling with laughter all throughout the book. Church folks really do act that way. So good I had to get the two sequels that followed. If you want to know the truth about people in church, get this book! It will have you rolling with laughter.
church folks  May 30, 2007
Church FolkThis Story is a breath of fresh air in literature dealing with the church. Though it is fiction, its bases is rooted in Historical fact, anyone associated with an episcopal-type church setting[churches run by Bishops} can readily see its reality. The
church organiztion described is a grass-root organiztion as the clergy are paid a nominal salary inducing some to take shortcuts in gaining funds to downright extortion. Rev. Theophillus Simmons is a dedicated minister who ends up well. Rev. Marcel Browm and cronies break the rules and is brought down by his spurned fiance Saphronia. Saphronia is the real heroine of the story. Hell Has no fury like a woman scorned. The story is set in the rural south between 1960-1964. This story needs a sequel,or a series. It would lend itself to the big screen. the story grips you from the start,it is easy reading . It is worth your time.
