Item Description...
Despite the follies, foibles, and idiosyncracies of their parishioners, Theophilus Henry Simmons, a young African-American pastor, and his wife, Essie Lee Lane, are determined to hold their congregation together and teach its members the true meaning of faith and love. A first novel. Reprint. 18,000 first printing.

Publishers Description
Mississippi, 1963. Essie Lee Lane is a small-town girl from a humble background who doesn't take "stuff" from nobody. Yet even she isn't ready for the Reverend Theophilus Simmons, one of the South's most fiery, respected young preachers during an era of vast social change. Down-to-earth, caring, and oh-so-fine, he's everything Essie never thought she'd find in a man, and he realizes she is everything a pastor needs in a wife-a First Lady to share the joys and challenges of his ministry. But Essie and Theophilus soon discover that dealing with the contentious members of Theophilus's church will be no honeymoon. With their parishioners in turmoil and their denomination facing a major scandal, Essie and Theophilus must put their faith and love to the ultimate test as they struggle to lead their congregation to God's sweetest rewards.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Church on the down low  Mar 25, 2007
I've heard about lots of scandalous things happening in church but this book took the icing off the cake. A call girl service started by members on the deacon board. I couldn't believe all the sex that went on at Greater Hope with the pastors and different women outside of their spouse. This was absolutely a great book to read.
Church fiction  Feb 19, 2007
Wonderful novel about real lif4e christian people. I would highly recommend it.
Lord, have mercy...  Jan 6, 2007
I am a little over halfway through this book, and for Christian fiction, it seems a little out there. I'm all for pastors loving their wives, but this is too much....labeled "Christian" or not, I am not seeing much of a difference between this and "other" genres. Meaning the content. This could have easily been a Harlequin (sp) book. A fairly tame one, but Harlequin nonetheless. I mean, the only difference in the characters that I see is that they have titles in front of their names.

I would also agree about the church scenes being over the top. For the 23 years that I've been on Earth, I have been a member of a non-denom, so a lot the bureaucracy is lost on me, but I know for certain that we don't have people interrupting the service and talking thru it like these people are. Just bizarre. Couldn't relate at all. Of course, we back the word, but 20-word sentences while everyone else is silent..."no sah."

I'll probably finish the book tonight since some of the reviews have convinced me to read further, but as of page 263, these are my feelings. And I'm already skimming pages. Oh, and it was quite distracting to read that characters were thinking this or thinking that. Reading their thoughts didn't add to the story. And on the character tip....too many of them!

P.S. a sister telling her Pastor brother that he is "pumped full of baby" is pushing it. Seriously.
''Bless"  Dec 8, 2006
I just want to say if you are a spiritual reader then you won't have any trouble understanding this wonderful novel. It provides understanding of heritage in AA churches then and now, openness, and humorous.I recommend this novel to all readers -teens -adult,males and females.
culture  Jul 23, 2006
One way to learn about the culture of a people is to read fiction about their culture. I work with inner city children, and have been driving through their neighborhoods for years. On every other block there is a church. I have met many pastors. I never knew though, the inner dynamics of what going to church meant, nor did I know the vast web of churches and preachers. This book has whet my appetite for others like this one, down and dirty life among churches and their congregants.
