Grab a box of tissues.  Nov 30, 1999
If the song makes you cry like it does me. Grab a box of tissues for this one. I think that it is one of Rob Lowe's best.
Excellent Condition  Nov 30, 1999

If you're looking for a Christmas movie, you found it.  Nov 30, 1999
It's too bad that people looking for a different kind of movie blame their mistake on the movie!

Okay, if you don't want a sad movie, this movie is not for you. That doesn't make it a bad movie. Any number of stars in a mistake. You just got the wrong movie.

If you throw up at the thought of tender, affirmative feelings, this movie is not for you. That doesn't make it a bad movie. There a millions of hostile movies out there. Pick one.

News flash: there really ARE towns in the U.S. like the one in the movie (which was in Nova Scotia). If you hate small, friendly towns, then stay away from them. They probably wouldn't like you either.

On the other hand, if you like the feelings that are supposed to be associated with Christmas, this movie is a rare find. It's very easy to flub on tragic scenes. This movie doesn't. The acting by Kimberly Williams is just right. The timing and the scripting of the scenes is just right. As Maria Del Mar said in the special feature, these people act the way people really act. They don't throw things or rant the way most movie scripts have it. Maria, by the way, played her part very effectively.

I'm no fan of Rob Lowe, but his lawyer convinced me. Maybe I've known too many like him. They really are like this. If this strikes you as stiff, get over it. You want a lawyer, this is a lawyer.

I'm as easily depressed as the next guy, but I did not find this movie depressing. Tragic, yes. Depressing, no. Not sure why. The fact that the husband and son were going to go on, going to make it and be okay. The reformation of Robert was credible. It was thoroughly prepared and touching.

So, I found it a cathartic movie and very much in the true spirit of Christmas.
Sappy Mawkish Seasonal Tear-jerker  Nov 30, 1999
Worst of the entire genre of holiday movies. Nothing like a dying mom to pep up your holiday season, right? How about a dying mom and a dying grandma? And workaholic environmental lawyer Rob Lowe who has a radical change of heart on Christmas eve.

This film leaves no cliche unturned, right down to the tear-stained urchin who doesn't have quite enough money--from recycling cans, an enviro twist--for his dying mother's Christmas gift. It's set in small-town America with a thriving period-piece main street and no big-box stores. The fresh-scrubbed children sing religions Christmas carols in public school, snow falls on cue, the African-American school principal takes a kindly interest in the soon-to-be nmotherless child and there's a heart-of-gold blue-collar garage mechanic.

The one thing the film does mercifully spare us is the actual death scene. but we do have the tender moment of the child stringing Christmas lights around his dying mother's hospital bed.

I found Rob Lowe's acting to be stiff and uncomfortable. It felt like he didn't believe in this movie at all, but was essentially phoning in his performance. Kimberly Adams as the dying mother is too saintly for anything but a saccharine container.

Bottom line? Pass on this movie. And particularly for parents of young kids who may have separation anxieties already, a film about of a dying mother as an inspiring Christmas family entertainment seems to me to be a very very poor idea.
Mild Profanity  Nov 30, 1999
The movie says D***it twice. We bought the movie on the pretense that there was no cussing whatsoever, based on customer reviews. Just wanted to let you know in case you are looking for a clean story. Rated 3 instead of 5 for the profanity.
