Christian Theism and Moral Philosophy is a collection of twelve essays from leading Christian moral philosophers and theologians about the fundamental questions of ethics. The essays have been written from that point of view, but the positions taken often have broader relevance. Moreover, the collection focuses on several important and fundamental theoretical issues about which we believe there is legitimate disagreement among Christian ethicists. These essays exhibit explanation and argument regarding some of the possible answers to these fundamental questions in moral philosophy.
Christian Theism and Moral Philosophy is in three sections, each focusing on a central question or set of questions: (1) "The Metaphysics of Morality" -- What is morality about? What are the metaphysical foundations and implications of morality? (2) "Moral Epistemology" -- How are ethical propositions/judgments justified? (3) "Normative Ethical Theory" -- What are the basic rules, principles, or judgments of an ultimate, adequate ethical theory? In each section there are four essays, each articulating its distinctive answer to the relevant questions. While those answers range in philosophical character from "naturalist" to "supernaturalist" (and positions in between), each essay argues that its answer should be especially attractive to Christians, or that in this area Christian presuppositions allow for its answer as a legitimate option.
