Item Description...
Beloved of Christians worldwide, Saint Patrick was a fifth-century Christian missionary. Though more well-known for driving the snakes out of Ireland and using a shamrock to explain the Trinity-both of which likely never happened-Saint Patrick's best known contribution to Christian literature is an ancient prayer know as "St. Patrick's Breastplate" or "St. Patrick's Prayer." This lyrical exploration of the Christian faith and the centrality of Christ has been used by Christians throughout the centuries as a way to remind them of the ways they interact with the divine. In Christ, My Companion, Marilyn Chandler McEntyre explores the well-known portion of this ancient prayer, inviting readers to consider its meaning for them today. Drawing upon biblical, personal, and literary sources, McEntyre engages readers in their own reflections on particular ways they have experienced the presence of Christ and the variety of ways we are drawn into divine encounters.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
discerning the presence of God in our lives  Feb 4, 2010
This superb little book both explores the ancient wisdom of St Patrick's prayer (invoking Christ's presence, with, within, beside, before and behind us in our battles and on our journeys) and suggests specific ways we might become more aware in our own daily lives of the promised presence of Christ. Blending Biblical scholarship with personal reflection, these 13 beautifully written meditations are simultaneously deeply consoling and gently challenging, as we are not invited not only to appropriate Christ's presence with and within us but to reveal Christ's presence in the world. Thoughtful questions for reflection at the end of the book make this not only a wonderful aid (and a terrific gift) for anyone longing to broaden and deepen consciousness of God-with-us, but an excellent book for group study. Highly recommended.
Christ my companion: meditations on the prayer of St. Patrick  Jan 30, 2010
This was a disappointment to me because it was not a meditation on the prayer of St. Patrick but rather a meditation on a hymn that was derived from this prayer. Because of this, there were lines in the hymn not found in the original prayer. If one can look beyond this point how would I rate the book? Still just ok. The author has much knowledge but I find her style a dispassionate, lecture type of writing as opposed to Esther De Waal whose feeling for her subject matter very evident and just as informative.
