Reviews - What do our customers think?
Pride and Prejudice  Apr 25, 2008
Rarely when reading a book, especially a Christian Bible study one, have I jumped up in total disgust and thrown the thing straight into the waste paper basket. Especially having paid good money for it ! It's not because I disagree with the author or come from a different tradition. I have many books in my library which I am at odds with and perhaps think may draw the wrong conclusions. But at least I respect the intention of the originator to present a side , a teaching or at least a point.

No, the reason why this book provoked such a reaction, is the self congratulating way the writer talks about himself and his ministry. According to the opening comments, Mr Blackaby brought revival to the Canadian prairies and is responsible for the establishment of hundreds of churches. He is according to his own words another Samuel, another mighty prophet in the land ! It is a debatable point to what the 'prairies ' "revival" actually meant. But I know personally of a number of ministers who All had a part in the movement. To single ones self as the originator, is at best boastful. And in any case who brings renewal ? The Holy Spirit does! So to claim credit for His work smacks of self ambition to me. It doesn't sound at all like the humble Samuel I read of in the Bible. The same with Chapter one's opening claim of he himself founding numerous churches. I thought Jesus founds the congregations and He is the chief corner stone ?

Maybe the author didn't intend to imply it this way in the book, but there are no qualifications or notes correcting these statements . If someone else had written this about him or he had let his ministry speak for itself I wouldn't as half be annoyed. But these self-aggrandizing opening salvos were too much. To me humility and a pointing away from self to Jesus, is a mark of a person truly being led by God's Spirit. If a writer does the opposite , one must tread very carefully about their other claims of " anointing " and success.
Seldom I have felt so negative about a book that I cast it away, but this one managed to push all the wrong buttons.

I am not trying to throw stones on the author, or "judge" him too harshly . I just strongly object with the words he chooses to use in this book.

Choosen to be God's Prophet  Jun 30, 2004
I used this book in the class I am sponsoring for Woven Ministries intitled Understanding God and His Covenants. It is a leadership class which stresses the foundations of Christianity in our service to God.

Henrey Blackaby's book "Chosen to be God's Prophet" is practical in knowledge for those interested in serious ministry. It is also useful for those interested in understanding the importance of being established in the Word for spiritual revival. As one who was used by God to usher in one of the great North American revivals, Henry Blackaby comes across not only convincingly, but also with credentials not to be ignored. Being rooted through three generations (four, if you count his children)of full time ministry in the church has given Mr. Blackaby insight that few Christian writers can equel.

I used this book as a reference for my final sermon to the class entitled "What it means to be Rooted, Grounded and Established in the Word". I found that the points Mr. Blackaby stresses were consistant with the teachings of scripture in the Old and New Testaments. In his reference to "Defining Moments" Mr. Blackaby stresses the importance of what defines our hearts now and establishes the path of our future. His reference to "remembering God's works" in our lives, and the importance of "fear of sin" were effective parallels to the wisdom to be gleaned from Isreals 40-year trek thru the desert. Mr. Blackaby's knowledge of World History and Judeo-Christian History blend well with his personal life experiences to show us credible insights for those interested in being set apart in their service to God.
The book's seriousness and candor twords sin and the importance of the Word may not set well with some of the Grace Only belivers, but it seams to be balanced within the confines of scripture.
I enjoyed the message of this book and I'm looking forward to reading Mr. Blackaby's book on Christian Leadership.
