Reviews - What do our customers think?
Clearly Pro-Life Tale  Jul 5, 2008
I ended up reading and reviewing this book because the author utilizes a marketing agency, who offered me a review copy in exchange for an honest review. I chose to accept the offer because I work at a mental health clinic for children and teens, and the situation dealt with in this book -- a teenage girl falling in love and having an unplanned pregnancy -- is a situation our agency encounters from time to time. I was hoping that this book would portray a girl facing the tough choices following her becoming aware that she is unexpectedly pregnant, and that the different options would be explored, by the protagonist, in depth, before she made a choice, plus I hoped that it would realistically depict the consequences of her choice.

"Choices: My Secrets" tells the story of a pretty, popular girl, Rachel, living in a fairly small town. She does the unthinkable, and begins dating, then falls in love with, the star football player from the other high in town, which breaks all unwritten rules and long-standing tradition. Their relationship is secret, but otherwise seemingly perfect. A moment of passion results in an unplanned pregnancy. Rachel tells no one, and reluctantly decides that getting an abortion is her best option. While on the table at the free clinic, awaiting the doctor's arrival, Rachel experiences an epiphany-like dream about how wonderful and perfect her child will be, culminating in him becoming President of the United States. She interprets this as a message from God, and leaves the clinic, without getting the abortion. From that point on, we get just snippets of how wonderful life is after Rachel's baby is born.

If you are looking for story of a girl who actively considers all her options, makes a very difficult choice, and then deals with the tough consequences of whatever choice she makes, that is not here. If your teenage daughter is pregnant, wants the baby, and you are ready to support her one hundred percent, short-term and long-term, this is indeed the book for you. It glosses over the options of giving the baby up for adoption or having a relative raise the baby. It does look abortion square in the eye, before discarding that choice. If you want your daughter to believe that everything will be fine after the baby is born, that is the glowing story you get here.

I think that whenever an argument is made, that does not actively consider all options, and really focuses only on one option, that argument is weakened. Pro-life advocates might like this book, but the lack of realism in the book weakens its position. Pro-choice advocates will likely see the book as pleasant extremism. Those who are still debating the issue, will not see anything here to help them decide.

The book is a quick read, at just seventy-six pages, and the protagonist is easy to like. The book does state its point of view clearly and without hesitation. I think that this book would have been more useful if Rachel had actively explored and considered several options, before deciding, and if the consequences of her decision had been more typical. It might have been good to have the book portray two girls, facing the same situation, but making different choices.
From J. Kaye's Book Blog  Mar 5, 2008
Rachel and her friends are at Down Town's eating pizza when Gary walked in. He's the town's star athlete, but he's from a rival school. It's taboo to form friendships much less date guys from there. So he's considered off limits to Rachel.

Going against tradition, she went out with Gary. Their summer long romance was kept secret from friends. Shortly before school was to start back, they took the relationship to a physical level which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy.

Attempts to contact Gary failed and Rachel ends up at an abortion clinic. Feeling alone, she turns to God for guidance. Waiting in the room, she is given a vision of what could happen if she were to choose a different path.

In Thomas Wade Bounds book, CHOICES, MY SECRET is clearly a Pro-Life message and is a great guide to assist youth ministers as well as families with the same belief.
Great parent/teen conversation starter  Feb 23, 2008
Don't you wish there was an easier way to start parent/teen discussions with your child? Now there is!

Thomas Wade Bounds' new series for teens, Choices, gives parents a way to jumpstart conversations about the important choices facing our young people today. In the first book, "My Secrets", released by Xulon Press, young Rachel gets pregnant after one night of passion shared with her boyfriend Gary. She doesn't find out until after Gary leaves for college and he never returns any of her messages. Left alone to decide what she will do, Rachel believes abortion is the only way. As a frightened Rachel waits for the doctor to come in and perform the procedure, she passes out and has dreams of her unborn child, which make her realize she might have another choice.

"My Secrets" delivers a powerful message, but it is a bit heavy handed for my liking. The book would be better with the help of an editor, but it was still a quick and easy read--which can be important when trying to spur those parent/teen discussions. It will be interesting to see how this series of books develops and what topics will be discussed next.
This book will save babies  Jan 15, 2008
I gave this book 5 stars because I believe that this book will inspire single teenage mothers to decide to keep their babies. It is the perfect book for Churches to buy in bulk and have lessons on in their Sunday schools.
The book tells the story of a girl who has a secret wirlwind teenage romance and ends up pregnant. The book does a great job telling the story from a teenage girls perspective really capturing young emotions. When she decides to have the abortion she has a dream while waiting for the doctor and lives out her life with her baby. He is a star athlete, serves in the military, becomes a congressman and then president of the United States over his life time. When she awakes she runs out of the abortion clinic. She has her baby a few months later and gets support from her parents and friends. She truly loves her baby and is thankful she did not have the abortion.
I am personally against abortion, having three kids I have trouble understanding the thought process involved in killing an unborn baby. I know my current wife had an abortion when she was a teenager and still feels very guilty about it (she is 45 years old), it truly broke her heart. I always thought with all the abortions that have taken place in the U.S. we have probably aborted the scientist who would grow up with a cure for cancer, or an Abraham Lincoln, Mozart, or Thomas Edison. What has mankind lost in this holocaust?
Christians and the Church must reach out to provide safe places for these young mothers to go to get help through these times of need. This book will educate teenagers on the consequences of bad decisions but also give them hope.
Choices is a must read for all young teens  Nov 30, 2007
This book is an easy, fun read for such a multi-level, complex issue. As a mother of young teens, I feel very grateful that someone has finally written this book. It is easy to read and fast paced, romantic and thought provoking. The author clearly understands the feelings, emotions, thoughts, temptations, pressures and fears of young people today. This book allows blossoming young adults to travel through unchartered territory that could one day be theirs to face in a nonjudgmental, compassionate way. The ending provides an awesome twist giving a new perspective on the issue that no reader can ever forget. My son and daughter couldn't put it down. Neither could I. (Not for under 11)
