Item Description...
This remarkable book enables everyone to benefit from the thoughts of six eminent theologians as they explore what the Catholic Church in the 21st century can learn from the Catholic Church of the past. Each section of the book focuses on the Church during a specific time period and presents topics that are of interest today, including: sin, scandal, episcopal appointment, the role of the laity, collegiality, and much more.

Publishers Description
In May 2003, more than five hundred people--an abbot, several bishops, many monks, priests, religious men and women, lay persons, and parish ministers--gathered in Kansas City, Missouri, to hear six outstanding contemporary theologians explore the history of the Church and the challenges and hope which that history has for the Church today and tomorrow. At the conclusion of the symposium, Father Michael Himes said, "Permit me to suggest...that what you are part of today is not only a conference "on history...such a conference "is history." This remarkable collection enables everyone to see, hear, or read these extraordinary theologians as they explore what The Church in the Twenty-First Century can learn from the Church of the past. The six talks, each one focused on the Church during a specific time--beginning with the Church of the New Testament on through Vatican II--deal with topics of interest and concern today, including crisis, sin, scandal, appointment of bishops, the role of the laity, and collegiality. In addition to the six major presentations and the introductory words of facilitator Richard W. Miller II, "The Church in the Twenty-First Century includes the question-and-answer session at the end of the symposium.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
past is prologue  Aug 28, 2007
Interesting insights into how history can help resolve some of the Catholic Church's ecclesial probelms today.
A hopeful vision for the Catholic Church rooted in tradition  Sep 22, 2005
The Rev. Michael Himes has amassed an important collection of essays by well-respected Catholic theologians, biblical scholars, and historians. This book, which arose from a conference convened at the Jesuit Rockhurst High School (Kansas City) in 2003, surveys what lessons today's Church can and must learn from its past. The essayists demonstrate the ways that the Church has learned to negotiate the delicate balance between faithfulness to tradition and creative response to contemporary issues. I recommend this book for a general readership: from those intelligent readers interested in the history of the Church to scholars.
