| Maybe I missed it, but once I received this study guide, we noticed that it needs a DVD. So, that was another purchase we had to make. Overall, it was an informative, in-depth study of the historical evidence for Christ. Some of it is well-known. Much of it is not. It made for some great conversation opportunities. When I purchased The Case for Christfor use in the midweek church service of our small congregation, I was fortunate to read in a review that the participant's guide is a necessary tool for effective group leadership of the series. The Leader's Guide which comes with the DVD set does not contain the discussion questions which are a central part of the experience as envisioned by the producers, and the Participant's Guide does not come with the set but must be purchased separately.
Although we are using the series in the context of a group of (mostly) Christian believers, and it is entirely appropriate as a Christian apologetics/educational/inspirational tool for such a group, the producers envision it as an evangelization tool for those who are skeptical or unchurched but interested in the questions of whether Jesus even existed as a historical figure, what claims the Bible actually makes about Jesus, and what basis anyone might have for accepting those claims. This is the audience to whom the series is mainly directed.
The participant's guide contains a little review and background material for each of the DVD's six sessions, but the majority of the material consists of discussion questions, questions for personal thought, and, for each session, a section on "Personal Reflection" to be read and contemplated by participants between sessions. There is ample space for notes or reflection.
The six sections (corresponding to the six sessions on the companion DVD) are
1. The Investigation of a Lifetime
2. Eyewitness Evidence
3. Evidence Outside the Bible
4. Analyzing Jesus
5. Evidence for the Resurrection
6. Reaching Your Verdict
