Reviews - What do our customers think?
Superb!  Sep 26, 2009
This new edition of the definitive "Lives of the Saints" will be an invaluable resource for at least the next two generations. Careful distinctions are made between fact (or probable fact) and legend, both the strengths and failings of these holy men and women are fairly and sympathetically discussed, the times they lived in are vividly evoked. This edition breaks the plaster molds in which some devotional writers have tended to place Catholic saints and presents them as living, breathing, and palpably human. The authors take a critical view of some of the more improbable legends attributed to the saints, but for the most part do not dismiss the supernatural and miraculous (no attempt is made, for example, to "rationalize" St. Joseph of Copertino's levitations or the visions of St. Catherine Laboure and St. Bernadette). Not only Catholic readers, but anyone interested in the history of Christianity and many of the people who championed, practiced, prached, defended, and defined it throughout its history will find these volumes a fascinating read.
