Item Description...
Scripture commentator George Martin leaves no stone uncovered in his fascinating exploration of the Gospel of Mark. His verse-by-verse explanations are easy to understand and always begin and end with the premise that God has something to say to his people through his word. The book features interesting details relating to the history, geography, and culture of Palestine, along with the definitions of the root meaning of words used by Mark and references to parallel passages in the Old and New Testaments. Reflection questions provide plenty of opportunity for going deeper with God in prayer. This commentary is sound and well-researched, but not overly academic, so it allows readers to study the Scriptures and pray through them at the same time. (Formerly publishes at The Gospel According to Mark: Meaning and Message.)

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Gospel of Mark  Feb 21, 2009
I'm enjoying this book a great deal. It is not only full of facts, but it also is an aid to prayer and reflection.
Ranks with the best of New Testament studies  Jan 13, 2009
George Martin provides a thorough exploration of Mark's Gospel using a conversational writing style that belies the scholarship involved in bringing the gospel events into focus. By providing a sentence by sentence analysis of Mark's topics within their setting in first century Palestine, Mr. Martin effectively slows the reader down to a pace suitable for reflection. In addition to discussing the theological message of Mark, Mr. Martin provides background explanations for related cultural, geographical, political, linguistic, and historical issues along with Old Testament references with which Mark assumes his readers are familiar. The reader is left with the impression that he has actually been present at the events described. The book is scripture study with the energy of a novel. George Martin has written a parallel study of the Gospel of Matthew. One can hope that he maintains the energy to tackle the entire New Testament.
