Big Events and Everyday Thoughts  Apr 13, 2008
Judith Dunlap brings her experience as catechist and mother of five to this weekly journal designed to help others record the "big events" in life as well as everyday thoughts and actions. Her introduction touches the importance of environment, ritual, and personal witness in passing on the faith. The flow of the chapters follows the church year with each entry citing a relevant reading and offering a reflection, suggested family response, and space for a personal response.

For an entry on the baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:13-17) Dunlap compares God's words of praise for his Beloved Son to parental efforts to help children discover and appreciate their own uniqueness. We need to remind our children frequently that they are precious to God, she writes. She suggests we overcome the culture's notions of what is prize worthy by focusing on qualities (sense of humor, good listener) rather than accomplishments (good grades, sports successes). The family and personal responses involve naming good qualities in oneself and others.

A reflection on saying "no" to unreasonable requests from children is paired with the loaves and fishes story (Matthew 14:13-21) in which God is shown to take care of our needs. Dunlap uses an example of must-have sneakers too rich for the family budget. When she refused the perceived need, her son's anger resulted in friction, which Dunlap admits was exacerbated by her own feelings. "It was only when I could remember that I was the grown-up, and stay calm and firm in a just decision" that a compromise could be found, she writes. The family response section here is a discussion of wants and needs that leads everyone to name two of each. The personal response asks about a present need, how it might be attained, and how a failed effort will be handled.
