Item Description...
Overview
Are intimate relations between clergy and those they serve, or between mental heath professionals and their patients, ethical? Do such relations represent an abuse of power? Is meaningful consent ever possible? This book squarely addresses these questions-and contains surprising answers. Edited by Katherine Hancock Ragsdale, BOUNDARY WARS reflects fourteen diverse perspectives from mental heath professionals and clergy; theologians, ethicists, a lawyer, and a historian; academicians and practitioners; people of color, differing sexual orientations, and various ethnic identifications. While uniformly supporting victims and abhorring abuse, these contributors reveal profound differences in interpreting the need for boundaries in healing relationships. Some, such as Marie Fortune, Ronald Barton, and Karen Lebacqz, suggest only a "distance" model is morally legitimate; others, such as Carter Heyward, Beverly Harrison, and Susan Baur, suggest that rigid, artificial boundaries between individuals may not always be appropriate-and may in fact impede the therapeutic process. The first resource of its kind, BOUNDARY WARS is a much-needed road map for the sharply controversial journey to hearing.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Boundary Wars: Intimacy and Distance in Healing Relationshi  Oct 25, 2000
Katherine Ragsdale succeeds in her goal of "keeping the conversation going" regarding what constitutes ethical interpersonal boundaries in therapist-client and pastoral counselor-parishioner relationships. Chapters include viewpoints of psychologists, psychotherapists, theolgians, and clerics, with all viewpoints expressing varying feminist perspectives. Because contributors present very different ideas about what is or is not ethical in regard to interpersonal boundries, Ragsdale's book is both provocative and stimulating, leaving the professional to answer for oneself, how one will conduct oneself with clients and/or parishioners.
