Country music collections will welcome his story  Feb 20, 2010
Randy Owen was songwriter and lead singer for the country group Alabama, but his autobiography here is as much a story of faith and family as it is of music involvements. BORN COUNTRY: HOW FAITH, FAMILY, AND MUSIC BROUGHT ME HOME tells of Owen's rural Alabama roots, share-cropper farm heritage, and his experiences with superstar status and how he held on to his Christian values through it all. Country music collections will welcome his story.
Randy's story  May 2, 2009
If you pick up "Born Country," be aware that this is RANDY OWEN's life if you're looking for the bios of the other three members of Alabama, it's not in this book. Teddy's, Jeff's, and Mark's names are mentioned, of course, but only in reference to the group.
Having said that, Randy Owen talks about his rural childhood, his parents and sisters, and his close relationship particularly with his father.
You'll read about how Randy, Teddy, and Jeff first got together as teenagers and formed what eventually became the most successful country band ever. Owen talks about the years they spent paying their dues in South Carolina, and how they eventually got their big break. I enjoyed the back stories behind some of Alabama's hit songs, such as "Feels So Right," "Mountain Music," "Tennessee River," and "Tar Top."
Randy Owen talks about the hectic years when Alabama was at its prime, but he remained grounded in the love of his wife Kelly and their three (now grown) kids. He talks about a few of the health scares he personally had to face. Then Owen discusses his favorite charitable activities since Alabama "retired."
I'm sure Randy Owen respects his bandmates' privacy, but I would have enjoyed some anecdotes about their personalities and how they got along with each other during all those years in the recording studio and on the road.
Randy Owen is a True Southern Storyteller!  Apr 24, 2009
From an early age as a young boy growing up on a farm in rural Mississippi, I listened to- and sang along...probably out of tune- to the music created by the group Alabama. Now as an adult having made my own "sweet home" in Oxford, Alabama for most of my adult life, and being a publisher and writer myself (in the magazine and book songs, and you should thank me for that!)
I find myself still a fan of Randy Owen and all of the wonderful music he helped to create as part of Alabama.

As a fellow writer, I also admire his ability to tell a story in such a down-to-earth manner that the reader actually leaves this book feeling as if he or she really know Randy and the Owen family.

As if the string of hits and this wonderful book are not enough, I must say that Randy Owen (who I have heard and met on more than one occassion in media settings) also portrays a story of his own in living his life in such a way that he could be at the top of his profession for so many years yet stay so grounded as to make his home, not amoung the other elite or fame stricken, but instead right there, right with, the people who he considers "real", the common men, women, children and families who, despite massive levels of success, he has always considered himself a part of. This is a testament to this man perhaps more than any single feat he has achieved.

Randy is a true Southern story teller and the book is great. I recommend it as a must read for anyone who loves the music of Alabama, the south...and especially those of us who call Alabama our home.

Roll On Highway!!  Apr 7, 2009
"If Your Gonna Play In Texas, You Gotta Have A Fiddle In The Band....."

Randy Owen has written a great book on his life, faith, family and the start of one of the greatest country bands, "Alabama." I could not not lay this book down. Randy shares his passion for life, faith, music, and the dearest thing to his heart-Saint Judes Childrens Hospital.
Randy shares his struggles of the music business and their start at the Bowery in Myrtle Beach. The sudden death of his father just months before the big time arrived is still a struggle he deals with. There is plenty of laughs and tears as Randy opens his life to us.
Southern Gentleman  Mar 26, 2009
While Owen writes honestly about his life, this isn't a "tell-all" book. He doesn't share sordid details about the other band members or the disagreements they had. He admits they didn't always see eye to eye, but he never points fingers or calls anyone out for not doing things his way.

Randy Owen is a true Southern gentleman. He loves his wife, his children, and his mama. He speaks kindly about his town, his family and his friends. He gives back to others who are less fortunate.

And he can sing pretty well, too.
