Item Description...
Shrines to Mary all over the world attract more visitors nowadays than do Disneyland and Disneyworld combined. Part one contains some poems, dating back over a thousand years that have been newly translated, others have been written especially for this book. There are chapters on Mary's many titles, on the Rosary, on the way Ireland has stayed faithful to this great Marian devotion and helped it spread from the old world to the Americas. In part two the author illustrates how Mary is honored not only among Catholics, but among Orthodox Christians of the Luther, as well as by Muslims, beginning with the Prohpet Mohammed. A wonderful collection and ideal gift for all who share a devotion to Mary.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Totus tuus  May 27, 2005
One of the frequent comments made about the late Pope John Paul II was that he had a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. 'Totus tuus' was his catch-phrase - he gave his all for her. In this, the late Pope was not alone. As the author Peter de Rosa states, the attractions to shrines and points of visions of Mary draw more visitors than such heavily-publicised places as Disneyland and Disneyworld. The recent appearance of a water-stain in a Chicago underpass that is shaped (in some interpretations) like the outline of iconic images of the Blessed Virgin Mary bear out this popular attention and devotion.

de Rosa's book is divided into two sections - Devotion and Reflection. The setion on Devotion includes many writings, poems, hymns and prayers about the Blessed Virgin; de Rosa states that 'among the carols is the first ever written on the North American continent'; there are poems and pieces that date back over a thousand years (in fresh translation), and some that are newly written for inclusion in this text. The traditional pieces include the Rosary, the Myden Dheelish (Darling Virgin), the Magnificat, and the Salve Regina. More modern pieces include poems by Rilke, Chesterton and Hopkins, as well as some more recent carols and hymns. This section is not a simple reprinting of these pieces, but discusses these pieces in historical, literary and spiritual contexts, placing them in the ongoing stream of Marian devotion.

The second section is a series of Reflection pieces. The first, 'Mary is not a Goddess', explores some areas of tension with the phenomenon of Marian devotion, placing it in appropriate theological and liturgical context. Other essays look at the role of Mary in non-Catholic writings (de Rosa begins by exploring the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams' book on prayer with Marian icons as one example, both of appropriate use and non-Catholic suspicion). Mary's image is certainly strong in cathedral tradition; by the twelfth or thirteenth century, practically every cathedral built would be dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Notre Dame, Our Lady). Even Martin Luther had a life-long devotion to Mary, coming far closer to present-day Catholic teaching (and being far stronger than the Marian feeling of other theologians such as saints Bernard and Thomas Aquinas).

de Rosa includes an appendix which lists the 'Hail Mary' prayer in thirteen languages; indeed, this prayer can be found in almost every living language on earth.

Peter de Rosa is actually better known to many by his pen-name, Neil Boyd, under which he wrote the popular 'Bless Me, Father' series for British television. Wonderful in tone and in content, this is a book that will be a delight to any who, like the late Pope, pledge themselves 'totus tuus' to Mary. This is another gem by Columba Press, available through Dufour Editions.
