Reviews - What do our customers think?
A fast reading first effort  Jun 5, 2008
Here's an easy-reading romantic drama. When I started it, I would have characterized it as a "chase novel" since it starts out with a young woman, aided by a young man, heading across the plains to escape some killers. But that story more-or-less ends before the end of the book -- yet the novel continues on with the relationship between the young couple and others -- with a couple action scenes thrown in. In other words, this doesn't follow the traditional arc.

The pacing of the action portions are fast and I didn't lose interest or the train of thought. The non-action pacing naturally assumed normal life aspects yet it wasn't dull. Vital things were happening between the characters that would lead naturally to the novel's action climax.

Early on the Christian elements were downplayed, but they grew more frequent in the latter half. Still, it didn't bother an atheist like me because the characters weren't the kind to sit idle waiting for their God to rescue them. They continued to be proactive. I admired them for that.

Like many fast-paced stories, the characterization is pretty thin. The young woman and her mother were not much more than girl-next-door types. The young man and his father were like Marlboro Men. A couple other were the typical tough or cantakerous types.

If you like stories of couples thrown together by danger, with a large dose of wholesomeness, and you don't mind the unusual structure that I warned you about, this first published novel (so I was told by a distant relative of hers who directed me to this book) by Sharon Balts should satisfy you.

I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.  May 5, 2008
FROM THE BACK COVER:
Cassidy Henderson was only trying to survive. With ruthless killers chasing her, she meekly allowed private detective Brady Hollister to whisk her away from the scene of the crime. But Brady had a vendetta to satisfy. With a mind set on revenge, he intended to use Cassidy as bait to entice his enemy - until he lost his heart to her. In her romantic thriller, Black Mesa, author Sharon Balts explores repentance, forgiveness, faith, and trust in the Lord as her characters deal with heartache, separation, and a past Brady must reckon with. Cassidy's widowed mother, a stern U.S. Marshal, a cantankerous old uncle, and a rodeo clown who is an ordained minister help set the stage for an exciting contemporary adventure with Old West flare.

MY REVIEW:
The book opens with Cassidy walking her mother's dog when she witnesses a murder. She tries to hide but was really scared. Brady Hollister wisks her away from the scene. The crookeded sheriff wants to find the couple but for the wrong reasons. He puts out an APB on Brady stating that he kidnapped the girl. This begins the journey that will keep you captivated for the rest of the book.

The main characters were Cassidy and Brady but I fell in love with all the secondary characters, who actually played fair roles themselves. It was filled with suspense and romance as well as humor and some very touching moments.

This was a book I knew nothing about but the story sounded really good. I'm glad I took a chance and would look forward to reading any other books this author would choose to write.

I highly recommend it!
