Overview
Join Ken Mansfield on a road trip through the canyons of Hollywood, the outlaw alleys of Nashville, and the backstreets of his soul as this Grammy Award-winning producer recreates his journey through the lush landscapes of success and the deserts that led him home.

For three decades, Ken Mansfield lived the heady life of a record executive and friend to such cultural icons as the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Dolly Parton, and Waylon Jennings. He not only adventured through the parties of the Hollywood canyons, the backstages of Nashville honky-tonks, and the executive meetings of Savile Row in London, he helped create the music that would shape a generation. Along the way, he collected a Grammy, number-one albums, and a disquiet that he pushed soul-deep as he drove his Mercedes through long nights and lost days in search of an elusive truth. Between Wyomings invites readers to travel with one of the most intriguing music executives of the twentieth century on a tender journey through the sixties and beyond. Ken calls readers to reflect on the highways of their own lives, the turns and deserts that press them into the heart of a Creator who has been there all along. As Ken discovers, sometimes when we see how lost we are, we can finally begin to find home.

KEN MANSFIELD's legendary career in the music industry began as a member of the Town Criers, a successful southern California folk group in the early 1960s. From there he moved to executive tenures as US manager of The Beatles' Apple Records and, director at Capitol Records, vice president at MGM Records, and president at Barnaby/CBS Records. As a record producer, he was instrumental in launching country music's "Outlaw" movement in the 1970s, producing Waylon Jennings' number-one 1975 landmark recording, Are You Ready for the Country, and Jessi Colter's number-one hit "I'm Not Lisa." Ken also produced the Gaither Vocal Band's 1991 GRAMMY and Dove Award-winning Homecoming album, which also launched another historical movement, the resurgence of Southern gospel music via the Gaither Homecoming series of recordings, videos, and concerts. Ken is now an ordained minister, a sought-after speaker, and the author of four other books: The Beatles, The Bible and Bodega Bay; The White Book; Between Wyomings; and Stumbling on Open Ground. He and his wife Connie currently reside in Florida. www.kmansfield.com.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
a fine spiritual road memoir..  May 28, 2010
I thoroughly enjoyed this spiritual journey of Ken Mansfield. He has without a doubt led a very interesting life and in a road trip of a spiritual nature he leads us through his spiritual journey. A fascinating and introspective look at where he's been and where he is and how he got there.

Couldn't get into this one  May 24, 2010
The author seems like a nice guy who has interacted with some big names in the music industry over the years but his interations were not that memorable. These would be good stories to hear in casual conversation but not if you have to invest the time to read them in book form.

It's just...OK.  Mar 24, 2010
I wanted to be thrilled with this book! Seriously, how often do we get the chance to read behind the scene info from some of the biggest names in music and share in the author's Christian walk? The premise is exciting! I love the idea of a "road trip" outline.
However, the book itself lacks something. The stories are fun and interesting, yet somehow still not satisfying. I was moved by his testimony, yet had no desire to read on. It may be the oddest reaction I've ever had to a book!
Maybe in another place in my life I would have been happier with it. But right here, right now, this was not a favorite.

What did I think?  Mar 8, 2010
what did i think of the book?
well.......for one thing the small print gave me a headache. heads up on that!

second- i couldn't get into this book tho i tried to for a long time.
i did enjoy snippets of stories with the stars, like Bobbie Gentry, Glen Campbell, the Beatles, and more. reading how the author interacted with them was a good and short read each time.

BUT the part i kept hoping for more about was the author's relationship with God growing and becoming something it was not to begin with and it never came. it was "promised" but i found it lacking. substance i guess is the word i am looking for.

it was fun getting a glimpse into different stars' lives, like i said, being at the top of their field usually but that isn't enough to get me to say i really enjoyed the book. it wasn't a page-turner and i had felt like it would be.

Traveling America's Musical Landscape  Feb 28, 2010
Ken Mansfield has quite story to tell. As a former Capitol Records executive, manager of The Beatles' Apple label in America and a record producer, most notably producer for Waylon Jennings, he has seen more of America's musical landscape than most. Diagnosed, over a decade ago with a rare, terminal cancer, Mansfield is alive and thriving as a writer who is a devout Evangelical. But, don't let this fool you. In Between Wyomings he takes us on a parallel road trip, as implied by the title; a desire to grow in his faith while he travels American highways to the landmarks of his personal life and career.

In a deeper sense the title states the clear purpose of the book to make sense of the two Wyomings, the wilderness land of heady sex, drugs and rock&roll and the time of struggle in the wilderness of his faith. Does this sound interesting? If you have any doubts, here are some highlights: Jamming with Gene Clark of The Byrds in Northern California, working directly with The Beatles, finding himself at the roots of the Outlaw movement of the 70's most notably with Waylon Jennings...who once kidnapped him to have him to produce a song, the classic "We Had It All", Thanksgiving turkey with Ringo Starr and being a personal witness to the Beatles final live concert on a roof-top in London. But, more significantly, he describes his internal moral and spiritual conflict with clarity and purpose bringing his conclusion home with insight and universality.

Weaved into his story is the tension between his old life and his new. While these are based in his own personal witness and the Christian faith, the lessons he learns along the way are inclusive of those of other faiths and persuasions. The reader may be tempted to pass over the chapters devoted to faith in order to get to the fun stuff about The Beatles and other celebrities, but this eliminates the continuity, scope and dimension intended by the story. Only the closed minded will pass over these chapters leading to Mansfield's ending based on universal spiritual depth which does not attempt to evangelize, but instead, adds to his story in a way which supports its continuity.

With Between Wyomings, Ken Mansfield has successfully managed to write an original, captivating and engaging account of his spiritual journey as he weaves in some of the most important moments in rock, country and gospel history.
