Item Description...
These seventeen essays by many distinguished contributors--including Seamus Heaney and Mary Robinson--celebrate the unique contribution Enda McDonagh has made to the field of theological ethics. This collection mirrors his interdisciplinary approach and expands the scope of theological ethics well beyond its traditional scope, transcending the boundaries of the discipline in many different directions. Artists, poets, politicians, and theologians reflect on the manner in which the imaginative, political, and religious dimensions of life intersect in local and global contexts. Some of the subjects explored include Church politics and HIV prevention, ethical globalization, justice and the developing world, the social role of the theologian, and religion and the visual arts.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Beyond expectations...  May 27, 2004
Enda McDonagh spent much of his career as a professor at St. Patrick's College, Maynooth, Ireland - he also spent time at the University of Munich, St. John's University, New York, and closer to my home, the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. A Catholic priest in addition to being a professor of Moral Theology, McDonagh took degrees in theology, philosophy, and science, giving him a wide-ranging education from which to draw in his later career. Noted for his interconnected style of theology, drawing together the aesthetic and the political into the theological, he is able to show this interconnectedness also in the local and the global, and in the connection between the divine and the human.

This wonderful collection of essays by the Columba Press in Ireland (distributed in the United States by Dufour Editions) pays tribute to the various aspects of Enda McDonagh's work. Perhaps the most famous contributor to this collection is the Irish poet Seamus Heaney - a portion of Dante's Paradiso, entitled 'The Light of Heaven' begins the collection, bringing to mind McDonagh's idea of poetry as cure, as hope and presence through a creative and redemptive power. Other essays include one by theologian Stanley Hauerwas, who discusses McDonagh's idea of formulating an Appeal to Abolish War, a drive reminiscent of such movements as the Appeal to Abolish Slavery, an effort to change the hearts and minds of people who will in turn bring about change from the grassroot communities.

One of the most meaningful essays for me was that by Kevin Kelly, whose essay entitled 'It's Great to be Alive: Retirement and Human Flourishing' had many meaningful points for my role as a retirement centre chaplain. One of the most important questions becomes - what are you looking forward to? This kind of vision is important. How one approaches retirement is also important - it involves both losses and gains, and considering the relative importance of these is very personal, and very pivotal toward happiness. Kelly lists various aspects of a 'retirement theology', some of which include increased care for the preciousness of time, a greater humility, a sense of sabbatical, a tolerance for diversity and ambiguity - all these things are reflective of Enda McDonagh's theological contributions to the church in Ireland, too.

Being someone who has had a previous career in politics, is a published poet, has a hobby in the sciences, and currently studies and teaches in theology, it would seem that this is a book tailored for me, which is just about right. Enda McDonagh is not a name with which I was very familiar prior to this book, but after reading the incredible depth and sensitivity inspired by McDonagh in the contributors to this book, I long to study more of his work. So many festschrifts end up being dry and dull, of little interest beyond the small group of followers or devotees of the subject - this is not the case here. This is a collection that inspires, draws upon the reader to go further in both the topics discussed as well as the primary subject, Enda McDonagh.
