Item Description...
Overview
This book offers hope to parishes searching for a way to make their liturgies more meaningful in the local context. Written by a priest and a musician who have worked together for many years in the Canterbury House ministry at the University of Michigan, this book describes methods that demonstrate a respect for others' gifts and skills, discernment of spiritual needs, and welcoming the creative force of the Holy Spirit into the planning process. Though thoroughly based in the Book of Common Prayer liturgy, the experience and ideas presented here are described in ways that will be useful to all liturgical denominations.

Publishers Description
This book offers hope to the parish that is searching for a way to make their liturgies more meaningful in the local context. Written by a priest and musician who have worked together for many years in the Canterbury House ministry at the University of Michigan, the methods described here demonstrate a respect for others' gifts and skills, discernment of the spiritual needs of the community, and actively welcoming the creative force of the Holy Spirit to work even in the planning process. Based on the liturgical format of the Book of Common Prayer, Hamilton and Rush nevertheless outline their experience and ideas in ways that will be useful to all liturgical denominations."

The Art of Liturgy  Jan 12, 2009
"Better Get It In Your Soul" covers far more than "What Liturgists Can Learn from Jazz."
Reid Hamilton and Stephen Rush clearly demonstrate how liturgy can be presented as an art form, and by that presentation be enlightening.
Many hours of study and planning have gone into the liturigical services at Canterbury House, and the detailed examples of these services could be used by any spiritual community. "Better Get It In Your Soul" demonstrates how to bring all kinds of music to all kinds of people, and how to inspire and excite people to sing and dance.
Stephen's personal musical and spiritual journey from a boy of 7 in a Southern Baptist congregation to his present role as music director at Canterbury House is especially touching.
"Better Get It In Your Soul" is instructive and inspirational. Any church director will gain great benefits from reading about the artistry and soul of Canterbury House. What a fortunate congregation to have such perspicacious, compassionate and hard working directors! Reading and applying this book will bring a huge positive change to any congregation.

Whatta book! A must for jazz fans, church musicians, ministers and priests!  Sep 28, 2008
Better Get It In Your Soul: What Liturgists Can Learn From Jazz
By Reid Hamilton and Stephen Rush
Better Get It In Your Soul was written in response to these questions underlying contemporary worship: "Are we a diverse community? Do we wish to be? If so, how then shall we worship God, especially through music?" Our response to these questions determines whether people of diverse backgrounds feel genuinely welcomed into the congregation. Authors Reid Hamilton and Stephen Rush offer practical advice not only for music selection and performance but also for arrangement of space, seating, lighting, and sound in order to make worship truly welcoming, diverse, and respectful of both ancient traditions and contemporary sensibilities.
Writing as practitioners of the "Jazz Mass" and relying on their experience in a successful and thriving campus ministry, the authors provide a theological and musical basis, deeply rooted the music and spirituality of such composers as John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, and Albert Ayler, for conducting worship that is meaningful and attractive to contemporary congregations. Better Get It In Your Soul compares liturgical planning and execution to the performance of modern Jazz, with reference particularly to Ornette Coleman's Harmolodic Theory. Through an in-depth discussion of improvisational techniques in Modern Jazz, Better Get It In Your Soul explains how to develop and perform liturgy in context, responding to the needs and using the resources of the community in which the liturgy is conducted, including how to find musicians who have both the musical and spiritual capacity for such an endeavor.

The book offers an index of over 1500 pieces of music categorized by worship themes; Psalm Tones composed by Stephen Rush, suitable for singing each of the 150 Psalms, as well as Stephen's complete Blues Mass; and sample services from Canterbury House, the Episcopal Campus Ministry at the University of Michigan, where Reid and Stephen have built a diverse community engaged in deep, meaningful, contemporary worship.
