Item Description...
The complex and sometimes contradictory articulation of ethnicity, religion and gender informs this book on the cultural construction of identity for Jamaican migrants in Britain. The author argues that religion -- in this case Pentecostalism -- cannot be understood simply as a means of spiritual compensation for the economically disadvantaged. Rather, in the New Testament Church of God, one of Britain's largest African Caribbean churches, the cosmology of the church resolves the questions surrounding identity as well as suffering. Religious participation is one way in which African Caribbean people negotiate the terms of representation and interaction in British society.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
V ery detailed and insightful  Jun 10, 1999
This book is an ethnographic/anthropological study of a West Indian/largely Jamaican pentecostal church in Birmingham, England. The author's research appears to be first-rate. The book is a very complete and intimate account of the life of this church, focusing on the question of why these emigrants have embraced pentecostalism. In particular, she focuses on how pentecostalism is used to construct a satisfying and meaningful identity in a racially hostile environment. The book is well-organized and clearly written. The facts are clear and many, and everything is analyzed and explained quite reasonably. Anyone interested in Jamaican religion or the social psychology of pentecostalism will find this book very helpful and informative.
