Reviews - What do our customers think?
Not a true representation of Charles Haddon Spurgeon  Feb 24, 2005
This is another in a series of many "books" by C.H. Spurgeon published by Whitaker House. These Whitaker House titles are not actually books, but each chapter in each book is rather part of an individual sermon scotch-taped together in an effort to make them into a "book".

The result is very disappointing. Spurgeon was a brilliant theologian, a masterful preacher, and a beautiful writer. But Whitaker House has edited all these sermons in a weak and unsuccessful effort to make them "flow" throughout the book. As a result, the strong theology is lost in an effort to make the book more "inspirational", the masterful and logical exposition of scripture is removed to make the book "easier to read", and only the poetry of Spurgeon's writing style is preserved.

These Whitaker House titles are barely good for casual reading, and unfortunately they misrepresent the depth and breadth of Spurgeon's excellent sermons. Don't be fooled by these edited versions! If you really want to know Spurgeon, read Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit or several other Spurgeon titles published by Banner of Truth or Christian Focus and avoid these watered-down books.
Excellent book!  Feb 6, 2002
Charles Haddon Spurgeon has to easily be the greatest writer the Christian world has ever seen in modern times. If your desire is, like Abraham, to be called "The friend of God," read this book and prepare to never, ever be the same again!
More Than Your Average Sermon  Jun 25, 2000
In his book "Being God's Friend," Charles Spurgeon boldly challenges the read to pursue a substantive relationship with the Lord. His message is direct and, at times, biting. Spurgeon is not afraid to challenge his readers to a high level of dedication and servanthood. Using themes like "The Obedience That Faith Produces," Spurgeon touches on issues that many ministers neglect. Although at times the reading is slightly tedious, modern day analogies and a skillful use of language and literary techniques give the reader an enjoyable reading experience, overall. Spurgeon relies heavily upon scripture, both from the Old and New Testaments. Several of Christ's most neglected (and crucial) teachings are highlighted. For instance, "If you love me, you will obey my commandments," is a teaching which is discussed broadly. For those who are seeking and intimate relationship with the Lord, "Being God's Friend" would be an excellent supplement to the Bible .
