Item Description...
Frances, the little badger, thinks of a variety of ways to keep from having to go to bed

Publishers Description
Famed for her many adventures, Frances made her debut with this title over thirty years ago. In this first Frances book, the little badger adroitly delays her bedtime with requests for kisses and milk, and concerns over tigers and giants and things going bump in the night. Long a favorite for the gentle humor of its familiar going to bed ritual, Bedtime for Frances is at last available with the warmth of full color enriching Garth Williams's original nuanced and touching art. 'Here is the coziest, most beguiling bedtime story in many a day.'--Kirkus Reviews (pointer).

More About Russell Hoban & Garth Williams

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! David Small won the 2001 Caldecott Medal for So You Want to Be President by Judith St. George. His many books include The Gardener, The Friend, George Washington's Cows, Imogene's Antlers and Hoover's Bride. He is also the illustrator for Russell Hoban's The Mouse and His Child. His most recent title is My Senator and Me: A Dog's Eye View of Washington D.C, written by Senator Edward M. Kennedy.
After receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale, David Small taught drawing and printmaking on the university level for 14 years. He lost his job in the 1980s due to cutbacks. This brought both a crisis and a commitment to begin working on combining his love of art and writing. Submitted to more than 20 publishers, his first book Eulalie and the Hopping Head was eventually published in 1982.
Small works with watercolor, pen and ink, and pastel. His later works have a much softer look, but they continue to include his trademark attention to small details that beg to be poured over again and again. Growing as an artist is important to Small. He feels he has not yet done his best work, and enjoys challenging himself with new ideas, styles and media.
Small lives in Mendon, Michigan, with his wife, the writer Sarah Stewart.

Russell Hoban currently resides in London. Russell Hoban was born in 1925.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
great children's story  May 2, 2008
I remember my mother reading Frances books to me when I was little, and I couldn't wait to read them to my daughter. The Frances books are wonderful children's stories.
Great Book!  Apr 25, 2008
I loved this book when I was little and now my son loves it too. I was amazed at the negative comments regarding this book because of the spanking. It doesn't give my son nightmares - it's just a story and if anything it helps him realize that those noises he hears at night have reasonable explanations. I don't spank him - he equates that part with a time out but he does understand about spanking (there are many who still believe in spanking). A lot of literature has things that some consider undesirable - as a parent you don't hide those things but enjoy the art and explain anything that might be confusing to the child.
2nd generation loves Francis too!  Dec 16, 2007
I loved this book so much as a child that I (shame, shame) did not return it to the library! My old, stolen copy is almost falling apart so it was time to get another. I love the old illustrations. They are not bright and colorful but my daugther still enjoys them. As an adult raised on spankings as my primary form of punishment, I don't plan on handing that down to my daughter. I don't, however, have any problem with the spanking reference in this book. It is during a really cute dialog between Francis and her father and I enjoy her logical humor. I also don't have a problem with this book showing a child a lot of excuses to get out of bed. Kid's can think those up without ever being exposed to this book. In my opinion it shows how children who aren't tired, can let their imagination run wild then realize there is nothing to be afraid of. Don't be afraid of this wonderful and timeless book. Buy it with "Bread and Jam for Francis."
Hate to say it....  Dec 15, 2007
but, I have to agree with the person who talked about the spanking in this book. It is a bit too much...also, afraid to encourage my child with new ways to avoid bedtime.
Still a classic  Dec 8, 2007
I have no children as of yet, but I still love Bedtime for Frances. It's one of the books I memorized first when I was a toddler, and I can still quote it. I was surprised to find any negative reviews for it, but I guess that's the problem with not checking out books firsthand to see whether they're in line with your family beliefs.

To be honest, I'd probably have gotten a spanking if I kept waking my parents up every 10 minutes- having no consideration for your parents as fellow people is pretty naughty. I think this book really showed me for the first time that my parents needed sleep too, instead of having them awake or asleep whenever it was convenient for me. I suppose that wasn't the the lesson the book was trying to convey, but that's the lesson I learned at 2, and my parents were very grateful for it.

I can't wait to read this book to my own children, and to buy it for my nieces and nephews.
