Overview
The battle for a true view of the beginning is not optional. Our faith and the future of our world hang on the truth about creation. Dr. MacArthur insists that when naturalistic and atheistic presuppositions are being aggressively peddled as if they were established scientific fact, Bible-believing Christians "ought to expose such lies for what they are and oppose them vigorously."
Do you know what you believe about creation? Could you defend your views to those who deny the Genesis account? Battle for the Beginning tackles the tough issues of creation versus evolution by taking an in-depth look at Genesis 1 and comparing it to scientific evidence. In this book find answers to the challenging questions. Learn what the Bible says about how our universe began.

Publishers Description

The battle lines have been drawn. Is the enemy winning?

"Thanks to the theory of evolution," writes best-selling author John MacArthur, "naturalism is now the dominant religion of modern society. Less than a century and a half ago, Charles Darwin popularized the credo for this secular religion. Naturalism has now replaced Christianity as the main religion of the Western world, and evolution has become its principal dogma."

Many Christians who claim to believe that the Bible is God's revealed truth seem willing to allow modern scientific theories to replace the Genesis account of creation. Such compromises present a conspicuous danger. Bible teacher and pastor, John MacArthur, believes that in Genesis 1-3 we find the foundation of every doctrine that is essential to the Christian faith―the vital underpinnings for everything we believe.

"The Battle for the Beginning" draws a clear line on today's theological landscape. "Everything in Scripture that teaches about sin and redemption assumes the literal truth of the first three chapters of Genesis. If we wobble to any degree on the truth of this passage," John MacArthur insists, "we undermind the very foundations of our faith."

The Battle for the Beginning: Creation, Evolution and the Bible
By John MacArthur

Binding: Softcover

Back cover reads:
The battle lines have been drawn, and the enemy appears to be winning.

"Thanks to the theory of evolution," writes biblical expositor Dr. John MacArthur, "naturalism is now the dominant religion of modern society. Less than a century and a half ago, Charles Darwin popularized the credo for this secular religion. Naturalism has now replaced Christianity as the main religion of the Western world, and evolution has become its principal dogma."

Many Christians who claim to believe the Bible seem willing to allow modern scientific theories to replace the Genesis account of creation.

Such compromises present a great danger, MacArthur believes. He asserts that in Genesis 1-3 we find the foundation of every doctrine that is essential to the Christian faith - the vital foundation for everything we believe as Christians.

In this book he draws a clear line on today's theological landscape and calls on his readers to help him defend it. "Everything Scripture teaches about sin and redemption assumes the literal truth of the first three chapters of Genesis. If we wobble to any degree on the truth of this passage," he insists, "we undermine the very foundations of our faith."

MacArthur Loses the Battle for the Beginning  Sep 16, 2006
This book places the creation of the universe 2,500 years after the Babylonians and Sumerians learned to brew beer. Does the author know that by the late Middle Ages the search for natural causes typified the work of Christian natural philosophers? Even a medieval Christian mindset could embrace methodological naturalism - the heart of the scientific method - because it works.

The University of Paris cleric Jean Buridan, described as "perhaps the most brilliant arts master of the Middle Ages," contrasted the philosopher's search for "appropriate natural causes" with the erroneous habit of attributing unusual phenomena to the supernatural.

Enthusiasm for the naturalist view and study of nature picked up in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as Christians turned their attention to discovering the so-called secondary causes that God employed in operating the world. Galileo Galilei, one of the foremost proponents of the new philosophy insisted that nature "never violates the terms of the laws imposed upon her."

Scientific naturalism retains strong Christian support down to the present - hardly surprising since the concept was largely developed in Christianized Europe. Unfortunately MacArthur embraces the retrograde cant of the worst Evangelical Christian ignoramuses, denies history and reality, and wants to set your watch and worldview back to the Dark Ages. Welcome to the lunatic asylum without walls world of Young Earth Creationism.

The mangy dogma enshrined in this obtuse apologetic - that everything "poofed" into existence over a literal six day period as described in Genesis - is pathetically untenable. Nobody, especially John MacArthur, even knows who penned this contradictory and farfetched fable. Norse, Egyptian, Yokut, Babylonian, and Lakota creation myths, among hundreds of others, are equally well documented.

In the Young Earth Creationist iconography of ignorance "The Battle for the Beginning" is just another small painting. Genesis is myth. Get over it.

Excellent Resource for Conservative Pastor/Elders  Jul 31, 2006
Written from the perspective a conservative pastor with a heart for his flock, this book clearly explains the creation account and applies it to our present day situation.

Worst Young Earth Book I've Read  Aug 13, 2005
As an old earth creationist whose job it is to review young earth creationist material, I must say this is the worst young earth book I have ever read. The author takes a novel approach, in that he strictly uses emotion to argue for young earth creationism. The book is full of "God of the Gaps" type arguments. This type of argument says, "It's a complex organism, so only God could have created it." If something is beautiful, "Only God could have created it." If it cannot be explained, then "God did it." As a Christian, I agree with these statements, but they will never convince a non-Christian that "God did it." One gets tired of this emotional appeal very quickly.
Other young earth creationist books are wrong...but at least they try to present facts to back up their case. The facts in this book are few, and are easily explained.

Jesus was a creationist...  Jun 26, 2005
Scripture indicates that Jesus and the Apostles believed in Adam and Eve, man's fall, and even the serpent in the Garden. Moses' words were not taken by them as 'alegorical' or 'symbolic'.
John tries in this book to explain the Bible's account of creation - not for scientists - but for those of us wanting to learn The Bible!
Science and the Bible are not at odds...until people begin to take away what the Bible says and replace it with ideas of men. The biggest problem with this is that SCIENCE IS ALWAYS CHANGING!
The things which were scientific certainties 100 years ago are laughed at now. Even the science used by Clarence Darrow to attack the Bible during the scopes trial is now known to be false. I would rather trust a book that has stood the test of about 3500 of scrutiny rather than this weeks scientific "breakthrough".
A few other reviewers quoted old earth creationist theologians from the 1800's, and those men are entitled to their stance, as is anyone who holds a different creation view.
It just seems odd to me that those who argue for thousands and millions of years of history are not very fair to Biblical literalists like John Macarthur. They attack him as unscientific - but he's not a scientist - this book is really about the Bible, not science! They also attack him as unbiblcal...and then they give their Biblical interpretation...as if they were the only ones allowed to have one!
Some said he was unfair to attack Hugh Ross for his views, but how many have attacked John for his views on Scripture. I personally did not read anything that attakced Hugh Ross personally, but just showed why John stands for his position and not for Hugh's. Hugh's interpretation, not his integrity, was the question. (And as for John not showing up for a formal debate, only he knows why. Could the fact that he is a little busy being a full time pastor, radio speaker, seminary president and author be a good enough reason?) I would speculate, given his apparant covictions, that fear would not motivate him into not speaking.
The point is, if one wants to take the Bible literally (and because of the OT geneologies as well as Genesis' language, I believe John has) what is the harm?
Another reviewer said that it might make outsiders think we were crazy - but don't outsiders think that anyway when we start telling them that we serve a God who came to the earth born of a virgin to die on a cross to forgive our sins? Or maybe we have trouble believeing that too?
Altogether, the Bible is a book of miracles (non-natural occurances) from beginning to end. When we start saying "God didn't because science says..." we are undermining what "God" really means. He is the soveriegn ruler, capable of doing whatever He wants. And who are we to question how He does anything?

MOSES' ORIGINAL INTENT IS DETERMINATIVE  Jul 28, 2004

Only Moses' original intent settles how long the first of weekdays went.

A fine entry into the debate over whether to believe the Bible (Sola Scriptura) or to believe Scientistic Theovolutionary Cosmythology (Scientia et Scriptura)

Is a Genesis Day an Epoch as compromisers hold?

Or is a Genesis Day 1/7 of a week, 1/365 of a year as evangelical believers historically held?

See Genesis 1:14 for the definitive comparison of Moses' timeframes: seasons, days, years.

Bravo for a fine refutation of compromising theovolutionism.

See Refuting Compromise by Dr. Sarfati for a more thorough rebuttal of misguided scientistic approach of Dr. Ross, et al.
