Surprised by Christian "Flavor"  Jun 7, 2008
As I read the introduction, with its bible reference and multiple mentions of God and prayer, I found myself looking again at the cover and title to see if I had missed something that would have told me this was a Christian book. I did not. That left me feeling duped, in a way. While the author goes "light" on her own references to God, church, prayer and "ministry," they ARE in the text, which to me personally was a turn off. Had I known this was the writer's perspective, I must admit I would not have bought this book. There were other subtle aspects of the text that, I felt, were influenced by a Christian perspective, such as multiple personal stories and examples of mothers who chose not to have prenatal testing because they would "accept the baby no matter what" and at least two who had babies with Down's Syndrome and viewed them as gifts that were supposed to happen. Now, I don't have a problem with that, but I do have a slight problem with those being the ONLY examples provided. There are many over 35 moms whose personal values and positions do not reflect this - had the book been obviously labeled as Christian in its perspective, it would be more legitimate for it to present only one perspective.

The other complaint I have about this book is that the author spends way too much time talking about her personal situation and family. Makes for a somewhat interesting read, but feels more like a memoir at times than a universally applicable book that focuses on general issues of older motherhood in a conceptual sense which is what I was looking for.

Overall, this was not the book I was expecting or hoping to read. I'll keep looking!
A Wealth of Help for All Ages  Mar 22, 2008
As a grandmother of an active two year old born to my daughter who was on the cusp of thirty-six, we both found this wonderful book together. As we explored the pages, we learned a tremendous amount of knowledge that put our fears to rest. We also relaxed and enjoyed this bundle of Joy from the Lord.
The reason, we were involved with teenagers going through their own trials and tribulations. We had quite forgotten about raising a little one with his different needs and demands. I learned also, how to minister to my daughter better as she experiences a different schedule and way of life.
Best book I have ever read on the subject. Beth Vogt is clear in her writing with a wealth of information and easy to read advice from A-Z.
I would recommend this to anyone who knows or is experiencing a little surprise at middle age. I even showed this to my mother-in-law who had Jim's little sister when she was forty! She wanted to know where it was when she needed it!
Not a Mommy-come-lately  Sep 19, 2007
I,m not a Mommy-come-lately, but there is a 16 year span between our oldest and youngest. This book spoke to my heart, I cried and laughed. I love the fact that Beth included the views of her older children. A wonderful book of encouragement to all parents of children with a wide span in ages.
Wish this book had been around when I needed it most  Sep 18, 2007
This is the book I needed a few years ago when I had my second baby 16 years after the first. Beth writes very clearly about the physical and emotional challenges facing the older mom, as well as the advantages of her maturity and life experience. Her chapters on the other family members are equally insightful . I recommend this book not just to older mothers, but to their families and friends as well.
I loved this book!  Aug 24, 2007
Though I have not experienced a child after thirty five, I found a friend and perspective that I needed. There was a beautiful ease to reading an honest approach to mothering, at any age, any stage. Beth hs offered her reader a place for themselves, and will invite your own experince to appear within the pages of this book. You will truly appreciate the details that add depth, the honesty that flows, and the humor when the reality of the subject hits home. Happy reading!
