Item Description...
Rock and Roll is not dead.
This statement resonates on every track of "When Dreams Become Reality", the debut album from Thieves & Liars. The San Diego-based power trio have spent the last several years constructing a concept record that will saturate your senses and take you on an epic journey of dreams and betrayal, loss and hope. The Zeppelin-meets-Floyd production came through a painstaking transfer process. Using recording techniques from the late 60's and early 70's, the band tracked most of the record live, giving the songs a very natural and warm sound. Kyle Rosa's thundering yet graceful drumming provided the necessary foundation for bassist Joey Bradford, whose playing solidifies the rhythm section with tasteful lines of expression. The aggressive and soulful guitar of Corey Edelmann completes the massive sound of this three-piece. Bradford's energetic and passionate vocals flow seamlessly between songs, showcasing his ability to sound natural whether screaming on "Betrayed by Blood"; or pouring his heart out on "Alone";. The attention to detail and thought put into every song is evident in the production, which included organ, a boys choir, and strings. The violinist's Stradivarius will move you on the ballad "Forgotten", while the harmonizing boys' chorus will haunt you on "The Author of Dreams". This 71 minute masterpiece is sure to instill hope in today's rock and roll scene; there is a revival coming, and the preachers are Thieves & Liars.

Very Good!!!  Dec 15, 2008
The best album of this Year(2008)
Not Quite a Meatloaf album  Mar 6, 2008
As I began listening to this CD, I realized this was no ordinary 2000 era music disc. This was a band/producer attempting to harken back to the mid 1970's when rock groups created concept albums fully realized, telling stories. Examples of this are Meatloaf's Bat out of Hell and just about any Pink Floyd album.

While Theives and Liars harkens to them, it does so with its own voice. Do I like the album? Yes and no. Yes, the songs are fully formed and the lyrics have meaning and a flow. It's just that I felt as if the depth of the intruments wasn't as full as it could have been. Maybe it's because I'm a bit older than the pre-teen I was when Bat Out of Hell came out....Maybe it's just that I'm not used to this type of music any more. But, more to the point, I think it just needs more than one listening...
Not to my taste, but I'm 43  Mar 3, 2008
I got this CD because we have a 17 year old living with us these days, and my music runs toward 80s new wave. He liked this CD far more than my husband and I did, and I suspect a lot of it had to do with us not being as young as we like to think we are.

After 3 plays (to write a review) I haven't listened to it since, but my step-son has given it a few more listens. I think what makes me happiest about the CD is that I haven't had to censor it when he plays it with my 10 year old around. The 10 year old likes it more than any of us, simply because he loves anything that rocks.
Its good on its own.  Mar 1, 2008
OK- so I've had the album for over a month now and have put in in a few times and listened from start to end.
While Im a little young to remember Led and the others that this album is compared to, Im not so young to be uneducated. I know that those bands are classic, and comparing others to them is unfair and places a distinct perception in the mind of the listeners...a bias if you will.
With that, I can tell you that this album is good. Is a solid effort at music that is a little different that what is on the radio at the moment.
I like the anthems and the lyrics, the Christian undertone and subject of the record doesnt come into distraction at all. Im not sure how others feel about that, but I do like it.
Its a great compilation of songs that is pleasing to the ears. But if you go into it with preconceived notions, you are just setting yourself up for failure...proof that hype can help as well as hurt. My fave tracks are numbers 7 and 10, but thats just me. I will look forward to the bands next album and more than likely give it a spin or two as well. Solid effort, marred by the hype and unfair comparisons attached to it.
Thieves & Liars - 'When Dreams Become Reality' (Facebook Records)  Mar 1, 2008
Looks to be this San Diego trio's only CD (so far, anyway). Probably best described as modern-day classic rock. Seem to hear influences from Pink Floyd and Zeppelin and possibly a trace MC 5 and Soundgarden. Tracks here I dug the most were "Betrayed By Blood" (kick-*ss guitar work), "Road To Nowhere" - that has a 'certain' classic rock feel to it, their nicely written ballad "Alone", the title cut - sort of Dream Theater-ish "When Dreams Become Reality" and the full-throttled rocker "Good Times". Line-up: Corey Edelman-guitar, Joel Bradford-bass & vocals and Kyle Rosa-drums. Comes with an 18-page full color CD booklet packed with song lyrics and abstract art work. Very nice.
Not Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat...  Feb 29, 2008
First, the this site blurb is completely inaccurate. Pink Floyd may enter the soundscape a time or two, but Zep? Not even close. AC/DC? Who are they trying to kid? And from a band that delivers a Christian Rock concept album about the story of Joseph, comparing yourself to a band that has a discography that includes songs like Highway to Hell, "Sin City" and "Hell's Bells" is darn near comic.

That said, this hard rocking biblical epic sounds OK. Really, that is the kindest thing I can say about it. The notes claim they wanted to go old-school with the recording methods, but they forgot the part - as Deep Purple once said - about making a place to sweat. Not like being derivative is a bad thing, just think of the kick you get from Get Born by Jet or the debut from Wolfmother. There was technical inspiration there, but also good old fashioned rock and roll muscle. Thieves and Liars sound extremely talented and competent (and I bet they put on a sonic shake of a live show), but where is the punch? Where are the guts? Virtuosity alone doesn't cut it.

Which probably goes back the the general sticking point of God Guitars. One of the reasons most rock bands pour out their souls is because demons are haunting them. Even the usual suspects (U2, Creed, POD) sounded like they had conflicts to resolve. Well played generic boogie like "Good Times" betrays them (and begs why Status Quo or Foghat aren't on that marketing blurb) as goody-goodies that probably haven't seen the bottom of a bottle for a long time.

"When Dreams Become Reality" sounds like they've already banished the demons, and good for them. But they still need something more than technical prowess to be interesting. Giving your guitar to God rather than aspiring to be a Guitar God and making preachy records doesn't make you Led Zepplin, AC/DC or Pink Floyd.
