The Album For Bleeding Hearts (i.e. Christians)  May 15, 2009
Misery, Suffering, and the World should not be overcast by the drudges of War, Economy and politics. People and especially Christians should eat and drink of it, as hard as it is to consume atrocities in the injustices all over the world, we must be aware to them, and wrestle with it. To wrestle with our faith is to ponder these topics.

Sara's new album evokes these feelings deep inside of me. I've been a supporter of IJM and Love146 since probably about the same time as Sara was making this album. I grew up in the same town as Sara, it is a closed place to come from (some call it a time capsule), to witness her breaking the molds of American Christianity coupled with great musical aspects is joy to see as a musical artist myself. It is inspiring.

My wife and i have been long time Sara Groves fans, but what she is saying and what she is doing with her talent is a glimpse into the truest form of the "Kingdom of God".

My favorite song is "When the Saints". I find it to be one of the most powerful songs i've ever encountered. I want to share with you the bridge lyrics:

I see the long quiet walk along the Underground Railroad
I see the slave awakening to the value of her soul

I see the young missionary and the angry spear
I see his family returning with no trace of fear

I see the long hard shadows of Calcutta nights
I see the sisters standing by the dying man's side

I see the young girl huddled on the brothel floor
I see the man with a passion come and kicking down the door

I see the man of sorrows and his long troubled road
I see the world on his shoulders and my easy load

When the saints go marching in - I WANT TO BE ONE OF THEM.

Christ opened his ministry with the strong words of Isaiah - to bring freedom to the captives and loosen the chains of injustice.
This album moves seemlessly from song to song and is without a doubt her best album to date. Its too bad it is Steak and not Bubble gum so the radio stations will play it. God forbid we as American Christians focus on the realities of the world. Instead radio's love to play "Jesus is my boyfriend" songs, i digress.

Thanks you for reminding the world of each of our calling and duty Sara Groves.
A Good Christian Pop Music CD  May 3, 2009
"Tell Me What You Know" is my first Sara Groves CD. I didn't really know what to expect. It is more pop than rock although it sometimes seems like folk music with some country mixed in. Each song tells a story. Most of the songs are peppy which is a good thing. Overall a good CD which should appeal to a wide audience.
Good Music IS Good Music.  Mar 17, 2009
Good music IS good music no matter what. Artists who write and sing about faith or those who question theirs include U2,Jackson Browne,Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan to name but a few. They have taken us on their musical explorations of these subjects, some to greater success than others, and I for one was and am always willing to take the journey with them. Sara Groves is another traveller/explorer on the road of faith. This follow up to her outstanding disc "Add To The Beauty" is a fine piece of work that shows both her musical and personal growth. My favorite track on this cd is "Abstraction"(why this song isn't all over the radio baffles me). In closing all we can ask of our artists is to "Tell Me What You Know".
Tangy, tasty appetizers for your brain and heart...  Feb 16, 2009
Sara was a complete unknown to me until I was given her CD. She now has an enthusiastic new fan. Her words and music have an uncommon flavor that you just want to savor and allow to linger in your heart and brain for a good while. I found that after I "finished" my listening experience, I just kept wanting to go back for seconds and thirds of this great fare. Sara makes you think, and in thinking through some questions and experiences, you then begin to allow your heart to feel the hope and the promise that God is there, that He is good, and He loves you. Her CD came to me at a very raw time, and her words helped me remember that, because I love Him and desire to follow Him with all that I have, the Lord will truly work out all things for good in my life. But more than looking inwardly, her music also gave me a profound desire to share the greatness and goodness of the Lord with others, especially with those who hurt inside. Jesus gives comfort and brings healing. Taste and see that the Lord is good. Sara's music is a great appetizer for the Bread of Life.
An Uneven Album  Feb 2, 2009
Sara Groves moves percussion and bass to the forefront, and her unadorned piano a few steps back, in this middlin' project. There's no problems with the music, all of which is pop-competent and workmanlike. She sneaks a little bit of funky bass into the second track, and still uses her piano to good effect in the song "I Saw What I Saw". The songs are catchy, though they don't especially stand out from one another, and many of them feature the standard repeating, radio-ready, 10-second opening hooks. Groves' voice, which is soft and carries an ethereal, "pure" tone, is not well-suited for rocker songs. She sings in a softly scooping way, which works fabulously for ballads but not so well when what you want is high energy.

I think many of us might be transferring our feelings of warm appreciation and affection for prior albums (and Sara) to this album, even though it isn't as well written. Sara seemed to be going for impressionistic metaphors -- "childhood" is running through a meadow and looking at the stars at night -- but much of it comes off as sketchy. The wordplay isn't vivid. Some of it seems awkward (love is still a "worthy cause"?). Not enough concrete images, and the wordplay seemed unimaginative.

Her strongest songs in the past have been anchored down to particular people she knows, places she's been, and concrete experiences she's had. She's not been an abstractionist who creates moods with word fragments (think Bob Dylan, or even America's "Horse With No Name"). Many of these songs seem depersonalized. I don't think impressionistic poetry is her strength. Much of it seems to be about concepts in abstract, which is ironic, considering that one song laments our habit of thinking of suffering people as abstractions.

The album is almost no distinctly Christian elements (there's a repeated reference to Paul and Silas in "When the Saints"). The religious references throughout the album, though used appropriately, are generic and vague. So this is why I gave it 3 stars.
