More About DC Talk

Register your artisan biography and upload your photo! Since releasing their album Jesus Freak, dc Talk has emerged as a leader in the pursuit of melding rock 'n' roll with provocative questions of faith. Although various rock predecessors have examined spiritual issues--U2, Van Morrison, and Bob Dylan immediately come to mind--dc Talk has taken the notion to new lengths, both in commercial terms and depth of artistic exploration. Numerous Dove Awards, three Grammy Awards, two platinum albums, one gold album, and two gold-certified long-form videos attest to the group's ability to bridge the gap between religious and secular audiences. "We are very open about our Christian faith," says Toby McKeehan, "but when we make our records we want to create a musical experience that anyone can immerse themselves in. One of our goals is to encourage listeners to question themselves and to seek out truth."

Authoring the books in the JESUS FREAKS series is the newest venture in an ongoing growth process which began when the three members first met in the mid-1980s while attending college in Virginia. After relocating to Nashville, dc Talk released a series of increasingly ambitious-and successful-albums, beginning with their self-titled 1989 debut; followed by their gold-certified 1990 sophomore album Nu Thang; the platinum-certified 1992 opus Free at Last; 1995's Jesus Freak, a platinum-plus watershed which afforded the group more mainstream success than ever before; and 1998's Supernatural, which reflects the maturity and sophistication of their latest stage of development and growth. They have sold over seven million albums and have won four Grammys.

With Jesus Freaks and Jesus Freaks Volume II: Stories of Revolutionaries Who Changed Their World Fearing God, Not Man, they launch into a new media form to challege readers to question their standards of faith and dedication. By giving these stories a platform from which to be heard, they hope to impact the world in a way they never have before.

Whether forging strong bonds with concert audiences, expressing their faith in the recording studio, or confronting readers with no-compromise stories of commitment, dc Talk strives to treat their audiences as equals rather than receptors. McKeehan says,"We want to create art that encourages people to think about the things we think about-spiritual issues and truth." Max adds, "Just as we all share the idea of caring and conscience, we also share the hunger to find truth and meaning in life."

With Jesus Freaks Volume II, dc Talk once again encourages each of us to set out on our journey to discover our response to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
What will people think?  Aug 28, 2006
When I was in high school, my dad got me "Free at Last", and I'll be blunt: I hated it! Back then I was looking for something that would not only be good, but sound good, and I was a new Christian. A few years later after I'd graduated, my best friend told me he had the latest dc Talk, "Jesus Freak". And believe you, me, I was big time like... WHO CARES! He asked me to just give it a chance, and after listening to the title track, I WANTED IT! Today? I still love it!

Yeah, the song Jesus Freak was what caught my attention. But there was more than just the mere 1 song. They asked the haunting question in track 4 with What if I Stumble? and really gets you thinking. Then they keep the ears peeled with stuff such as Day by Day, or Mind's Eye. They really get the attention, as well as the thought process going with Colored People, yet humor you in the middle with Mrs. Morgan. For a band I hated in high school, it got rocking rather quickly, and pumped up the volume in quite a few places! dc Talk is still one of the most influential bands in the Christian industry today.

So, am I missing anything? Oh yeah, if you see a Track 13 listed, it's there. Just don't hit the stop button immediately, because just when you think it is over, you have a surprise in the end.

They ultimately ask the question we all should ask ourselves if we follow Christ. That question comes in the title track, Jesus Freak, and asks a very simple, yet pointed question. It simply says near the end, "What will people think? What will people do?" Hey, if you're afraid of being persecuted a little, then leave these men alone! What will people think? I could give a rip! Jesus Christ died for me, and He lives in me. Regardless of my stumbles, He is always there to pick me up. And He LIVES!!! Rock on, dc Talk!
Just a few little missteps...  Jun 22, 2006

One of the best of all time. Every song is different and amazing. The recording quality is a tad rough, but that was the times. This is tied with Delirious's "World Service" for greatest Christian CD ever.
It's a messy mix of grunge, pop, and a dash of rap that ultimately works  Apr 1, 2006
CCM Magazine rated this as one of the Top 100 Christian Albums Ever in a book they released. (#14 if you're scoring at home). It's nicknamed the "grunge" album and while there are clearly hints of the influence of Nirvana et al. here and there, it's more as accent: DC is still a pop group first and foremost. This also marks the first time that rapper Toby McKeehan tried his hand at vocals. There are some wretched missteps here that keep this from being a spotless release, but it probably is their finest effort overall at trying to reach out to a mainstream audience while hanging onto their Christian base. They were able to get a minor Top 40 hit with "Between You and me". (Though it's not one of the better songs here in all honesty...)

Crusty guitar blasts lead off "So Help Me God" announcing instantly that DCT's members had been listening to stuff other than hip-hop. The title track overcomes its often goofy lyrics ("I saw a man with tattoo on his big fat belly/It wiggled around like marmalade jelly..") thanks to a snappy guitar riff that propels it (though the guy who compared it to the second coming of Hendrix is seriously smoking something), use of "quiet/loud" grunge dynamics, and its singalong "What will people think/when they hear that I'm a Jesus freak?" hook. "What If I Stumble?" ponders the impact the group has on its audience of mostly teens and its emerging status as one face of Christian rock to those outside the Church. ("What if I stumble?/What if I fall?/What if I lose my step and I make fools of us all?") "What Have We Become?" questions individual believers presentations of Jesus to the world at large. ("A preacher shuns his brother/Cause his bride's a different color/And this is not acceptable/His papa taught him so..")

"Day by Day" is an attempt to update the Godspell tune for the modern age, but hearing someone sing "Thee" against rock guitar just sounds quaint at best. It's definitely not the bold move into relevancy I'm sure they wanted. Skits "Mrs. Morgan" [the elderly next door neighbor complaining about the noise from the drummer's practicing] and "Jesus Freak (Reprise)" [a mock operatic version of the title tune] fare about as well as most skits do. You might get a brief chuckle at first or second hearing but they quickly become automatic skip button activators.

While I'm not so sure I'd rank it among the Top 100 contemporary Christian releases ever made, it probably is the 2nd finest effort by the band.

Absolutely Sublime  Mar 25, 2006
Many years ago as a teenager I owned this CD and some time ago I lost it. I remember it being a pretty good by memory but didn't exactly have a good idea of all the music on it. However, after recently repurchasing it I realized just how amazing this CD is from top to bottom. Lyrics that many of us can relate to as humans it speaks to the heart. It has given me a new inspiration for life. The vocals are some of the best I have ever heard. With one song not even on the same wavelength as another each has its own characteristic powerful tone and variance. This CD will be a timeless classic I suspect and in its own right already is being over a decade old and still very popular. I would challenge a person who doesn't listen to Christian music to give this CD a chance and don't look at it as something that is trying to change you but just astonishingly true words and see if they have the same affect on you as they did on me.
