Reviews - What do our customers think?
Athens and Jerusalem  Dec 18, 2005
"What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?" Tertullian asked this question at the beginning of the third century. What has philosophy to do with God's revelation in Jesus? The same question is asked by many theology students today. Theologians frequently refer to philosophers. Many schools of theology require some philosophical background of prospective students.

Athens and Jerusalem seeks to clarify the essential place of philosophy in the history, practice and content of Catholic theology. Through a consideration of topics from ancient, midieval and contemporary theology, this book exemplifies how different philosophical perspectives have influenced theological reflection and the formation of doctrine. Readers are invited to think with theologians as they employ various philosophical perspectives to enlighten Christian revelation. In brief, the reader is invited to participate in the theological enterprise.

The pluralism of theological perspectives which characterizes Christian history and the contemporary church is due, in no small part, to the variety of philosophical perspectives employed by Christian thinkers. Athens and Jerusalem argues that this pluralism is the enevitable and rich consequence of God's revelation in Christ. The book concludes with a proposal as to how we can understand the unity of Christian truth without forfeiting this rich diversity. -- from book's cover
