More About Jan Karon

Jan Karon Born Janice Meredith Wilson in 1937, Jan Karon was raised on a farm near Lenoir, North Carolina. Karon knew at a very early age that she wanted to be a writer. She penned her first novel when she was just 10 years old, the same year she won a shirt-story contest organized by the local highschool.

Karon married as a teenager and hand a daughter, Candace. At 18, Karon began working as a receptionist for a Charlotte, N.C. advertising agency. She advanced in the company after leaving samples of her writing on the desk of her boss, who eventually noticed her talent. Karon went on to have a highly successful career in the field, winning awards for ad agencies from Charlotte to San Francisco. In time, she became a creative vice president at the high-profile McKinney & Silver, in Raleigh. Wile there she won the prestigious Stephen Kelly Award, with which the Magazine Publishers of America honor the year's best print campaign.

During her hears in advertising, Karon kept alive her childhood ambition to be an author. At the age of 50 she left her career in advertising and moved to Blowing Rock, North Carolina, to pursue that dream. After struggling - and failing - to get a novel underway, Karon awoke one night with a mental image of an Episcopal priest walking down a village street. She grew curious about him, and started writing. Soon, Karon was publishing weekly installments about Father Tim in her local newspaper, the The Blowing Rocket, which saw its circulation double as a result. "It certainly worked for Mr. Dickens", says Karon.

The Father Tim stories became Karon's first Mitford novel, At Home in Mitford. The book has since been nominated three times for an ABBY (American Booksellers Book Of the Year Award), which honors titles that bookstore owners most enjoy recommending to customers. The fourth Mitford novel, A New Song, won both the Christy and Gold Medallion awards for outstanding contemporary fiction in 2000. A Common Life, In This Mountain, and Shepherd's Abiding have also won Gold Medallion awards. Out to Canaan was the first Mitford novel to hit the New York Times bestseller list, subsequent novels have debuted on the New York Times list, often landing the #1 spot.

Karon says her character-driven work seeks to give readers a large, extended family they can call their own.

Jan Karon currently resides in Blowing Rock, in the state of North Carolina. Jan Karon was born in 1937.

At Home in Mitford, a poorly written adult fairy tale.  Jun 15, 2008
I was looking very forward to reading this book and desperately wanted to like it. I threw in the towel three quarters of the way through. I respect Karon's goal and believe it was sincere, but the novel fell extremely short in many ways. Mitford is a picturesque town filled with people that ALL get along. There are no disagreements among them. Every thing is sweet, too sweet, right down to the dialogue between the characters. They speak too perfectly. Everything seems to work itself out in an almost perfect way. I understand that this is a Christian based novel, however as many Christians know that prayers aren't always answered in the way we expect or want them to be. Answers to prayers don't always come wrapped up and neatly tied with a bow. One of the deciding factors for me to give up reading this book involved Barnabas the big black dog that bounded unexpectly into Father Tim's life. Father Tim finally takes to him and adopts him. Some time later, the dog is snatched into a car (appeared to be the possible owner, may not have been- didn't read any further to find out). Everyone in the town begins to contribute to a reward fund. Okay fine. Father Tim adopts the dog, never trying to locate the dogs possible owner. Even when the reward money is being collected no one mentions this. This town of hypocrites is collecting reward money for a dog that doesn't actually belong to the "church" rector. Nobody ever gives a thought that there could be a little kid crying his eyes out because his dog ran away. I'm sorry if I gave some of the story away, but in all honesty, consider it a favor. This book is just a poorly written adult fairy tale. I give it one star that is on the brink of burning out! If you must read it, save your money and borrow it because if you make it through, you're not reading again.
At Home In Mitford  Jun 6, 2008
Wonderful book. Best fiction I have read in many years. Light, friendly reading about a town you would love to be from.
A delightful treat!  May 25, 2008
Jan Karon is one of my favorite authors and this first book is one of her best. One of the reasons it's so enjoyable is that she covers the whole spectrum of Mitford as she introduces you to her characters and their town. Karon is a master at characterization, plot and setting--no wonder her books can't miss! She sprinkles them liberally with humor, as she brings in some serious subjects, but is never heavy-handed. Her books are a joy to read and to re-read, which certainly cannot be said of every author.
A Warm and Delightful Novel  Apr 4, 2008
I finally dwelved into the Mitford Series, beginning with the first book in the series, At Home in Mitford, by Jan Karon. The book features Father Tim, the local recor, and the many colorful characters that make up the denizens of the fictional town of Mitford. Karon paints vivid picture of this peaceful town and the rolling hills that surround it. This is a feel good book, that has a meandering pace, and a great heart. Father Tim often quotes verses from the Bible and will pray for strenght and guidance. There is the old cliche about how somethings are like crawling into a warm comfortable bed, well this book is like crawling in a warm, comforatable bed, with a fire going ini a stone fireplace, and the sound of a steady rain outside. A delight!
A book that starts out slowly and draws you in  Mar 25, 2008
In the first few dozen pages of this book, as Jan Karon is letting you get to know the characters, not a lot happens, and I confess that I fell asleep a few times. But soon I took the bait of Mitford and was hooked. It's a comfort to read, and I came to have affection for Father Tim, following closely his relationships and caring, as he did, for his parishioners. It's of the same ilk as The Number One Ladies Detective Agency, in that some serious issues are dealt with in a way that doesn't make the reader feel beaten up emotionally. This book is a comfort read, and after I finished it I was anxious to start the second in the series.
