Reviews - What do our customers think?
In his own words.  Jul 7, 2008
Finally, one may read the very words of Arminius. One may step back into his very life, marriage and death. This book details not only his progression of theology but much more, the Reformation ongoing and war of independance from Spain - all creating havoc across the lands of Holland.
This book will show you Arminius the man, the preacher and father - here his own words and attitude will paint the picture of a gentle pastor.
Anyone truly curious about Arminius or his Doctrine ought to read this enlightening book and cannot help but find dispelled so many great myths attributed to this worthy Reformer!
Priceless  Jun 20, 2008
Carl Bangs' "Arminius: A Study in the Dutch Reformation" is a must for any scholar interested in the life, background, and theology of James Arminius (1560-1609). Next to the three volume "Works of Arminius," I hold this book in the highest esteem.

It would also behoove Calvinists to investigate this particular book, as it would lend them an accurate, historical account of Arminius' theology, by-passing misrepresentations and caricatures which have plagued this Reformed theologian since the early seventeenth century.
A Unique, Enlightening, and Rewarding Study (Especially for a Calvinist).  Jun 19, 2006
Mr. Bangs presents a very systematic and, sometimes, personally affective account of James Arminius. Not only does he present Arminius objectively as a pastor, theologian, and professor but also a few yet essential insights of a man who has had his share of sorrow.

I was warned many years ago not to read this book. I was told by Calvinist-leaning individuals that it would upset my faith and cause me to fall away. I have read this book 5 times and filled it with highlighting and notations. Apparently, the one who warned me never read the book. And I think that is a big problem with those who adhere to Calvinism when discussing issues regarding election and predestination. I would encourage every Calvinists to read this book not for the purpose of changing their view but to understand what Arminius really taught as, it seems, many books by Calvinist theologians misrepresent terribly the teachings Arminius espoused. To call him a heretic is to be wholy misinformed or uninformed about the man Arminius and his teachings.

Reading "Arminius" has helped me to understand the significance of Arminianism, it's value and importance in Christian theology, the essential issues that divide two camps of believers (one, Calvinism, and the other, Arminianism), and it has provided me with an alternative (and better, in my estimation) understanding of certain "problem" texts in the Bible.

Most important of all, to me, it has brought me closer to a man after my own heart; a man who knows the pain of lose, still trusts in God, and seeks to present God in a way that makes Him available for all sinners to embrace in repentance and faith.

I highly recommend reading this book. If you do not, you will miss a very important phase in Christian history. It has gotten to a point that when I'm going to my study to read this book and his "Works", I tell my wife I'm going to spend some time with my best friend.

Buy it, read it, you won't regret it.

Also, read "The Works of James Arminius", London Edition, 3 vols. So far, I've read all volumes three times. It is a little difficult to read at first, but once you get use to how it is written, you'll find it very rewarding.
The quality of printing is rather bad  Apr 24, 2005
I was happy to see this book reprinted. However, once I took a look on it, I realized that I have to return it back to this site. All the pictures in the book are black and barely readable, and about 5 pages in the appendix are printed upside down. The text sometimes is pale and sometimes too black, the quality of printing varies by the page. The overall impression is that the book is of cheap quality, which makes the price of $37 quite unreasonable. This is the third book by Wipf & Stock publishing house that upsets me, and I'm afraid I would have to avoid buying their books in the future. As for this site service, it was great as usual.
Arminius - The Man for the Hour  Jul 2, 2004
Arminius was a Dutch theologian who lived in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Arminius was a moderate Calvinist who ran into the radical Calvinist elements and spent the last years of his life in debate with them.

The book does a good job of setting the historical circumstances of the life of Arminius. Things like the importance of the East India Company are detailed and their relationship to the political fortunes of Arminius the theologian are explained. In the end, Arminius is a sympathetic character. Today most of his ideas are widely accepted and the more radical form of Calvinism is for the most part a sideshow to the main event.

This book is recommended by other authors in the field as the best book on the life of Arminius and with good cause. I give it a high recommendation as well.
