Overview
Apostolicity Then and Now explores apostolicity from its origin to today. Apostolicity is a fundamental mark of the church, referring to Jesus' faith given to, carried on, and taught-unaltered-by a continuous line of apostles. This book primarily focuses on how apostolicity pertains to the church as a whole and views apostolic succession in light of how apostolicity is applicable to the church. Scriptural, historical, theological, and ecumenical contexts provide a thorough study that includes worldviews and their impact on apostolicity.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
An exceptionally important work  Aug 29, 2005
The Franciscan who wrote this book now serves as the president of the Washington Theological Union, a Catholic school of theology in Washington, D.C. As a disclaimer, let me note that Fr. Burkhard taught me Christology. Because I had taken a class from him, though it was on a different topic, I decided to read this book. I found APOSTOLICITY THEN AND NOW to be the most concise and persuasive narrative I have read about the three worldviews that Christianity has confronted in its two millennia of existence: the premodern with its emphases upon hierarchy and authority, the modern with its focus on certain knowledge and the turn to the subject, and the postmodern with its preoccupation with multiplicity and the other. Fr. Burkhard eloquently explains the meaning of apostolicity in light of each of these three worldviews and makes a strong argument for the Church to engage postmodernism. Though I have felt a certain degree of skepticism and even animosity toward postmodernism, Fr. Burkhard's presentation left me convinced that the Gospel must engage this understanding of the world in a far more open, accepting, and involved manner than it addressed modernity. Anyone who cares about the world of ideas, loves the Church, and desires to offer the Gospel to the present age does well to read this thin but thoughtful work. Fr. Burkhard has given a great service to the Church in writing his book. It deserves wide attention.
